That may have been the case in '08 but do you think it was the case in '01? United was a tear back then. I doubt that on Sept 10 management was thinking about massive reductions, bankruptcy, and a future merger. Once you start down the path of reductions it's really hard to turn that train around.

When 9/11 hit, United was already involved with a merger with USAir. They were planning on shedding routes in the northeast and even starting a separate airline called DC Air. The industry merger rumblings were already started before 9/11, the fallout after the attack just threw gas on the fire.

What?
The events of 9/11 significantly changed the direction that United, and the industry, took. Prior to 9/11 United was growing significantly and looked unstoppable. Post 9/11 they began furloughing and retired the 727. They never recovered from that reduction. Absent the merger, they never returned to the size and scope they were prior to 9/11.

You definitely want to be the one leading, not the one chasing. I think that is the sentiment many of us who have been in the industry for two decades + feel

The government was concerned with overlap of routes and was putting up some resistance. Robert Johnson was the former CEO of BET, and was going to be in charge of the new airline. They even tried to pressure the feds by playing the race card in the papers about how he would be the first black CEO of an airline. The deal was having problems, but it was still there. 9/11 finished it off.

Just looked it up and it appears that the deal fell through in early July, 2001 with both USAir and United announcing they were no longer seeking the merger due to anti-trust concerns.

I’m not sure how this turned into a legacy CAL v. UAL battle, but let’s try to stay on topic. The merger was a decade ago.
I’m a legacy CAL guys. I would recommend to those of you that support this AIP (at least based on the rumors), to listen to our legacy United brethren. They’ve been put through the ringer and we could all learn something from their apprehensions.

By Sep 10, 2001 UAL was several months past a merger attempt that had been dead for much longer than that, posting what were then record losses, and were already a few months into the bump/excess circus. The only growing they were doing was in I’ll fated Biz Jet and internet ventures. Their CEO had come off a year where he had been panned by the street and labor and was roughly a month and change from losing his job. Quite the tear.
