If this was a simple furlough mitigation program with equal paycuts for all and nothing else it was doomed to fail from the outset. So we tweak this and that to make it more palatable for specific groups ensuring passage. Some tweaks have led to a vocal outcry. So now they have to massage it again. Fortunately, this one will only cost them 3-5% of the votes. An acceptable trade-off for those promoting I would assume.

I think you are spot on with your assessment. For the very senior, the reduction in monthly awards is irrelevant since they can pick up extra flying. For the rest of the pilot group, a reduction in awards without caps is 100% concessionary (seasonal worker model)… It Would be very hard to argue otherwise. Caps prevent this from being desirable for the company during recovery (winter 2021/2022)

Just to be clear this isn't the very senior at the top of the seniority list but those senior in each BES. As in those who were junior capts, bumped into a senior fo seat yet retaining their capt pay. If we put caps on pay now the top 20% in each BES get build their paycheck vs the 5%. There's only so much flying to go around. You do the math regarding the rest and their ability to pick up pay.

Go up 1000 numbers from me, and you are still in the bottom third, and those guys/gals would be quite senior as narrowbody FOs (in most bases). So, all I meant to say, is that there are winners and losers in every “third,” if that is in fact how this AIP is broken up

Therin lies the rub. There's lifespan and then there's the quality of that span. In my state the average cost of a full-time nursing home is approaching ten grand per month. That kind of money can decimate a retirement portfolio in fairly short order. Unless you started very young and were very aggressive and a bit lucky. It's a moving target.
Plus, I like toys. None of the calculators I have seen say, "And you can afford (to buy, maintain and feed) one of these!"
