The stockholders are saying what exactly......
Remember that so-called "hostile take over" that management was scared of a year ago when they did the stock buy-back?
Maybe a hostile take over isn't a bad thing. Maybe we could get a management team that is focused on operational metrics instead of social justice metrics??
Kirby washed out of USAF pilot training. Why? He couldn't meet standards....Now, he wants to lower them for everyone? Lets type him in a 777 and make him honorary Captain and send him off to Shanghai to fly some revenue trips.

Kirby was making good progress in repairing the relationships and trust in flight ops by demonstrating a knack for going after the competition. Now, it seems Kirby wants to run a social justice flying club instead of a highly competent and highly mission/profit focused airline dedicated solely to the safety of our crews and passengers.

My goodness, look at all you social and network media addicts. Well guys, I hate to break it to you, but United's AVIATE tweet was just good marketing. The tweet you're all hung up didn't contain anything controversial, but you can always count on your favorite media sources to re-interpret a message to reaffirm your biases and invent outrage. Stop taking the bait.
To any candidate applying to Aviate know this: I (and the majority of us) are excited to see this exceptional opportunity for our future aviators; moreover, we are looking forward to working alongside the people that make it through all the training and requirements.

Thank you for your thoughts and the gracious "Welcome aboard"
As a white male, I’ve spent the last 22 years flying with 99 % white males. I’ve run out of things to talk about and welcome the diversity this might bring to a flight deck I’m a member of. As long as they are qualified to be in the seat, being them on. The difficult part of this ambitious goal (at least 2500 non white males trained/placed at United Express carriers and ultimately United Airlines over the next 10 years) is finding those individuals and steering them in our direction (through Aviate). We won’t be the only carrier trying to attract these underrepresented future pilots. I hope our Aviate group is looking into junior high visits etc where career decisions are often formed because we are really going to need a ton of interest in order to see 2,500 success stories in ten years.
Over the years I’ve noticed a trend. During boarding, young people (age 6-15) traveling with their parents may or may not be interested in stopping by the flight deck for a quick tour and pic and their parents often direct the interest. White parents are far more prone to nudge their kid into the cockpit for a tour. I’ve noticed several parents that were non-white smile at my offer but say things like “he/she doesn’t need to be up there bothering you, or are you serious?” Non- white people don’t often know pilots personally and therefore aren’t as comfortable walking into a strange work environment while a larger percentage of whites do know or have airline pilots in their lives and feel more comfortable interacting with them in this setting. A cockpit visit confirmed my desire to do this for a living. I was around 6.

Kirby is playing the woke card but at what long term cost.

Ditto. And I guarantee you none of these keyboard warriors will have the stones to call someone less qualified in a face to face conversation. This thread is great justification for the only prejudice I’ve developed thanks to this career. I can’t suppress a groan when I see older white men rocking Kirklands and white kicks. Def wardrobe of choice for a bunch on this thread.

And when you wrap it up with a needless swipe as above you’ve lost any high ground due to childishness. Most people gain better perspectives by debates with serious people that have different views gained by lived experience. In fact that is the benefit of diversity in any organization. That’s how we move forward towards better ways to solve problems in a more lasting and comprehensive way unlike your contribution which does nothing but detract from solutions!

Whether I agree or not with what is going on, does it matter? The only thing that matters to me is will I feel comfortable sending my family on a United flight knowing the quality of pilots we have. If we are sending guys and girls through that shouldn’t have gotten through specifically because we are too scared to fail someone of race or gender, then we have a problem. However if we are still getting quality pilots at the end of this, my job hasn’t changed, get people safely from A to B. I can’t send a letter to Scott expect anything to change.

In case some weren’t aware of United’s response to the backlash, here is an article discussing it.
https://simpleflying.com/united-airl...ity-critisism/
“All the highly qualified candidates we accept into the academy, regardless of race or sex, will have met or exceeded the standards we set for admittance.”
Hopefully this statement will diffuse at least some of the anger.
