New Hire Questions

True, but you don't have to be in base in 10 hours. You have to be there in 12. I've had good luck calling the crew desk and telling them I'm commuting in, I'd be out of phone contact but would be able to make any assignment they give me during my commute in. If they call you on the first minute of short call, you still have the 2 hours to report. If they've notated that you're commuting in, you won't get an UTC.

As was said, the only way to really understand it is to get in the thick of it. But for what it’s worth, I would never ask them *IF* you can get on a flight and be out of contact… I always just told them my phone will be off, this is my flight number if you’re wondering where I am. Never had any pushback. Most of the schedulers you are talking to are just trying to cover their own butts… Don’t let them choose for you

Something to consider - you can always bid UP but it’s a 2 year freeze to move laterally (737 to A320) or down (756 to 737). So as a new hire, you might be better off taking the 320 or 737 particularly if you’d like more options to bid out of your new hire base sooner.

Supposedly we have already had around 1,000 retire or take the early outs since the pandemic started. By the end of 2025 we will also have an additional 1,500 cumulative retirements. A combo of the max 10 and 321XLR deliveries will most likely begin replacing the 757’s in several years. Some of the 737NG and 320’s are getting pretty old too and could be replaced by some of these deliveries as well. If Kirby was serious about winding down the single class 50 seaters in the near future, these aircraft could potentially accelerate that. Only those in Willis Tower know how many are growth, how many are replacements, and what our hiring needs will be. They do seem to be putting the resources in place at TK to go nuts though. Time will tell.

Not trying to be a naysayer because the future is looking up, but never do the math on aircraft orders. Over the course of time, they’re frequently delayed, canceled, or converted to something else. Weren’t we all supposed to be flying 350s by now?
