That was more a screwup by our NC on the last contract. The company can roll a SC with less rest than long call.
If I were a scheduler and could cut 2 hours off of notification, I would. I'd have every single reserve on short call. This was an oversight on our NC which scheduling has decided to exploit.

 

Interesting point. Assuming someone takes the upgrade to NB Capt immediately after probation, based on recent growth and orders to come, roughly how long would you have to wait to get a line if everyone else bids on top of you who previously bypassed?

Was assuming only the East/West coast bases were junior enough for NB upgrade off probation.

 

Probably within a year of being checked out on the line at EWR and SFO.

 

this is not true at all.. I have been here around 7 years and around 90% in EWR.. this accounts for rapid growth since I have been here.

 

It took me a bit less than a year after getting checked out in the left seat in SFO to get a line. And I upgraded at the first opportunity. With less hiring than is going on now.
And then there's Covid right now also.

 

ok, so how long did it take you to upgrade though? Right now guys can upgrade almost right away. With having been here for 7 years and 4000+ guys below me and not being able to hold a line in Newark, I think it’s safe to say it will be a long long time on reserve. Plus if/when we get a new contract, add ona few more years on top of that.. maybe I’m wrong but I’d love to hear some other opinions.

I probably upgraded with similar number of people below me and percentagewise on property. I upgraded at 18 years on property. Most of the guys above me were already where they wanted to be.
Things have been pretty messed up with Covid so I wouldn't use this abnormal time as a normal guage. How many months are people waiting to get checked out on the line?
For instance, there are a lot of pilots still waiting to be trained in the left seat along with some unfilled vacancies.

Those are the two most junior bases; I'd have to look, but suspect that you gain seniority a little faster at SFO, especially with all of the movement in DEN.


Edit: of course an alternative solution is to wait until you're say, 85% on the CA list before bidding for CA. That would get you pretty close to having a line when you get checked out, at least in SFO and EWR. And this may be what's happening now - I took pretty much the first upgrade I could at 18 years on property. People around me were more eager to upgrade as soon as possible after waiting more than a decade.
Further complicating things is WB flying. Once cities get less restrictive with Covid policies, I expect to see WB FO go much more senior, including more than a couple NB CAs bidding back to WB FO.
Lots of moving parts that will alter the answer.
