No 756 EWR CA or 320 EWR CA after 45 unfilled 320 CA last bid. I am wondering if this has to do with the 787 vs 350 decision. If 787 can be had at a discount to replace 767 flying at a better fuel burn / mx cost. I never expected to see a 350 but beefy 787 staffing leaves me to believe they decided.
Any staffing decisions due to anything A350 related remains years away.
The beefy 787 staffing is surely due to the long-awaited resumption of deliveries.

not sure that’s true anymore. Every NB FO can basically be where there want to be within 6 months. So the folks left in the coastal bases want to be there or it is the best option for them. Driving from Sacramento to SFO is really no different than driving from IN or WI to ORD.
CA bid where they want to be - or not - as evident by the unfilled CA slots.

I start at UA Sept 27 and my ideal slot would be ORD 320, or, failing that, ORD on anything.
It seems like at the moment every new hire that wants ORD is having to commute somewhere else before they can get back.
Is it possible that a vacancy bid with unfilled ORD slots will benefit new hire classes until those slots are filled?
Also what date does the vacancy bid close?

So, How old are you? If you are fortunate to be super young (and thus very junior in your class) it could be an issue. Seniority in your class is based on your age, oldest is the most senior in the class. So, depending on what UA offeres in your class and what the pilots senior to you want, you could be in great shape or walking on egg shells. There have been a large number of unfilled 756/777/787 slots lately (along with a metric @#$%ton of unfilleds on the 737s and A320s) and it appears that will continue on this vacancy bid. Those unfilled assignments (not the unfilled Captains) are what the company can then offer to new hires for the next 90ish days. The company gets to choose what order and how many of each of the unfilleds to use in each class until the run out of that assignment or run out of the time limit. That process is what forces the company to continue to have vacancy bids every month or two so they can contniue to have unfilled assignments for new hires and the process is what will allow you to lateral to a different base or move up in pay categories of aircraft if you desire.
if you get a 320 or 737 initially, you could potentially get ORD immediately or at least lateral in very quickly. If you get a 756 you would get assigned a slot on the coasts, but again likely be able to lateral to ORD fairly quickly (4-6 months on the proprerty). If you get a 787 you would get the coast and likely take longer to get a lateral to ORD (9-18 months). Both those time estimates are WAGs based on the current hiring rate and the distance from the bottom for the current seniorty of the junior people getting those bids.
The least desirable would be the 777 (despite the fact that it is an awesome airplane to fly!) because ORD does not (currently) have a 777 base. So, unless they reopen the ORD 777 you would not be able to lateral to ORD and would likely have to wait the full 2 years of your freeze flying in a different base and then bid for something else in ORD.

In general getting to ORD quickly doesn't look like it is going to be a problem. Depending on your relative seniority in your class it could happen immediately.
