Why do people always mention the amount of unfilled vacancies?

By definition we cannot fill the vacancies within the company because the moment you leave your position you create a vacancy behind you.
Unless there's a reduction.

We mention unfilled CA vacancies because it’s a new phenomenon here at mother U. SK says he wants to grow the airline but he’s not willing to make it livable for junior lineholders and reserves who have to commute to places like EWR and SFO. That’s why we find ourselves in this position. Make being junior in BES suck less and viola problem will be solved. Until then we will talk about unfilled CA vacancies and SKs inability to fulfill his dream of growing the airline with slave labor.

I see there are also many unfilled WBFO vacancies. I’m getting a really uneasy feeling with mother “U” getting cozy today with Emirates.
this may be a plan from SK that if we vote for the next TA we can grow with a new wide body order…or..we can code share w Emirates and be like
Delta.

Right, being a pilot at UAL is the same as slave labor…

Unfilled captain vacancies yes, point is completely understood. I'm referring to your referencing the 800+ vacancies as if anyone on property can actually change that number. We can't.

i am sure SK figured out that it is more cost effective to move flying to mid continent bases rather than compromising on pilot productivity to make the coasts more desirable

You must not be a United pilot commuting to reserve on the coasts since you don’t understand. This is NOT an entry level job. This is supposed to be the final landing spot at the top of a career. It should pay enough to afford a house anywhere someone is required to work or at least make livable schedules if they’re going to commute in. There is a reason they can’t get pilots to upgrade in those places under the current conditions of our contract. Call it what you want. If you don’t like slave labor, let’s call it “indentured servants”.

Zero unfilled 756 CA- which is the seat they were talking about.

How else can you tout “1 year upgrades” without having 6000 FOs bypass upgrade into the seats in the most expensive cities to live in the country. At least the FAA has COL adjustments per bases. A Narrowbody CA in CA makes less than a 737 captain in almost any other base.

don’t those unfilled FO spots (WB and NB) need to be there to cover new hires?
