right, so he’s mad he isn’t going to get paid for not working, and it’s no wonder why the general public thinks we are over paid babies who just want $$ to do nothing.

I am all about the protections from the company when it comes to work rules, but complaining about not being able to use a loophole to scam the system is dumb.

How many of those trips do you work on your RDO’s or are you senior enough to aggressive pickup what you want? It is crazy to me the amount of people at this airline who are ok with the fact a day off is not really your day off. Especially the existence of Global Reserve, FDO’s for basic reserve, and the ability for the company to work anyone into their day off for a small fee. As a narrowbody reserve, that’s 4-5 days a month I can’t plan anything. Reserve was a choice for me, but once my seat lock is up WB FO sounds pretty appealing. At least we can force the junior guys into the trash we have created for them, right?

it wasn’t a loophole…it was part of the contract. it wasn’t scamming the system. It was PART of the system. A feature….not a bug. There were ways to screw yourself….plenty of ways to end up flying extra for the same pay.

It was a holdover from when line bidding was a thing with no real way to avoid a bid line without hitting vacation. That’s why it was a feature. PBS doesn’t have that issue so why should there be an expectation of being able to intentionally bid a trip that is going to go get dropped because of vacation? While I agree that a vacation day should pay at least min day of 5 hr (5;15 I believe under Upa23) to get the add pay for a vacation day and get trips dropped with pay is an unrealistic desire.

Under the current and proposed contract it appears on nb reserve there's only one fdo per pay period and the rest are hdo. Is that not how it plays out?

There is no such thing as NB reserve. Basic and global are the categories. WB and NB can be either. Depends on the flying in that period. One global trip, though, and the whole category is global for the month.

Aaah, thank you very much, that makes sense.

My daughters are all grown so I honestly don’t care what days I work… but when they were younger I was a more senior WB FO and bid lines. For reserve, Rarely do I work into an RDO… maybe been rolled two/three days total in a year. I’m at the gline as a Captain and selectively bid reserve because I live 15 mins from airport and work much less. I normally have 5x SC a month. I only aggressively pickup open trips that are either places I want (ie, LIS vs LHR) to fly to and/or it looks like I’ll get assigned to eventually (3 open trips and 3 RSV in silo) . Normally these trips picked up are ones that I wouldn’t get as bottom feeder line holder. I also aggressively pickup SCs if I don’t want to fly or a trip I don’t want. WB FO in reserve is easy if you live in domicile.

Yes, most of the NB fleets and bases are basic reserve with one flexible day off. This will probably start to change when/if 321’s and max 10’s show up. So a lot more NB pilots will have to start dealing with RDO’s and only having 6 days a month to make solid plans.

The biggest rub for me with this TA however is if you look at page 21 of the Pilot Contract Comparison guide, we lag our peers when it comes to rescheduling footprint protection. It is industry standard to get pilots home on the same day they were originally supposed to. Here at United, you are always at risk of getting worked into your day off every time you go to work.

So not only do we get to deal with FDO’s and RDO’s, you can be reassigned into a day off if the company needs you. In fact with this new TA, the only days you cannot be rescheduled into are GDO’s. They can work you into vacation days and you can claim $1500 for them taking the day off from you. There is a lot of opportunity at this place to get worked into a day off, so make plans at your own risk.

It was a great feature for the senior pilots in a BES. Not so much for anyone else.

Let it go. That ship sailed with BK and thr introduction of PBS.
