Interestingly enough, due to Delta hiring a lot since 2014, a younger pilot will have better end-of-career seniority at DL vs. UA, assuming equally sized seniority lists. This is because DL will have more retirements in the last 10 years of their career than United, potentially because the average age of those hired 2014-COVID trended a lot higher than the younger average age of new hires post-covid.

United still has around a 6% advantage over Delta during the majority of the career at this time with 16-17k pilot groups.

Planning and what actually happens are 2 completely different things. If you don't think that sometime in the next 10 years everyone will furlough I've got a bridge id like to sell you.

This brings up a really good point. What is more important to you: spending your last, say, 20 years in the top 20% of the seniority list or the last, say, 2 years in the top 1% of the seniority list?

Personal preference could dictate either one is a great option. But it's definitely worth considering when making such a big decision... or just accept that the future of a particular airline is unknowable and that YMMV...

Like others have said lots of retirements, but beyond that I think there’s a lot of growth being fueled by the regionals reduction in lift. They won’t be gone but they are getting smaller. Gate availability in places like ORD makes mainline aircraft a priority, I think if Boeing could deliver faster things would escalate even more.

no one knows how their career will go till you set the brake ln your last flight. Jump in and swim strong !
50% at DAL was hired Jul 2016
35% at DAL was hired Jan 2014

Had this debate with myself a couple weeks ago. Went on widget seniority to see how long it would take me to hold the junior widebody (excluding 75/76) CA slot at Delta as a new hire: for the A330 out of JFK it was 31 years. Not a dig at the earning potential of a 320 CA or A350 FO by any means, but that's a long time to be waiting for the opportunity to trade your Christmases and Thanksgivings for widebody captain pay

Careful. I remember when I foolishly stated that we wouldn't award WB FO to newhires.
In the last decade, I have also heard many, many, MANY regional and ULCC pilots say the reason they're staying put is because furloughs at the legacies are right around the corner.

Not really

Assume widebody captain is 10% of an airline's positions. If you hold it for 10% of a 35 year career ... that would be a 31 year wait.

Guys who can hold wbca for 1/3 of their career got lucky. That's not a steady state option for everyone.

777 Captain at UA is at 35%. 787 is closer to 30%.
