This brings up a really good point. What is more important to you: spending your last, say, 20 years in the top 20% of the seniority list or the last, say, 2 years in the top 1% of the seniority list?
Personal preference could dictate either one is a great option. But it's definitely worth considering when making such a big decision... or just accept that the future of a particular airline is unknowable and that YMMV...

Had this debate with myself a couple weeks ago. Went on widget seniority to see how long it would take me to hold the junior widebody (excluding 75/76) CA slot at Delta as a new hire: for the A330 out of JFK it was 31 years. Not a dig at the earning potential of a 320 CA or A350 FO by any means, but that's a long time to be waiting for the opportunity to trade your Christmases and Thanksgivings for widebody captain pay

DL has 16,700 pilots on the latest seniority list,
10,800 of those were hired since 1/1/14. 5,300 have been hired since hiring resumed in June 2021.

LOL 2040s! In aviation, that might as well be year 2346. It is surprising though that delta has already hired 2/3 of the seniority list the last 10 years. That’s a lot of 30+ something year olds above you now

another very important question to consider is culture at AA/DL/UA. Do you want awesome seniority progression with uptight callsign pilots, grumpy old and duchie new pilots, or whatever we are. All the pay and work rules in the world won’t change the people you work with for the rest of your career

I interviewed at UAL annd DAL and sat the jumpseat on everyone. The cultures and happiness levels at certain airlines almost beats you in the face. Some airlines have more unionized labor than others and some work groups work in fear of getting fired. The welcome to interview email at delta is LONG and cold while United’s was three paragraphs and welcoming. I would rather work with people who aren’t so uptight and can actually enjoy what we do. The ex-northwest guys at delta are a different breed but few and far between. Culture is very real.

31 years would get you to 2200 if you were hired in 1992 or if you were hired today after a decade of Delta hiring 25 year olds?
