After that Captain pulled back on the yoke while in the flare because he didn’t trust his FO at all, I got closer (yes, the landing was going to be fine. It wasn’t day 1.)
After the 100 year old Captain got cold, and had me keep turning up the heat until I literally felt ill, I got closer. Also the same guy who told me about how “they” have a weather machine off the coast of Alaska, which is why we have these weird weather events.
After flying a 4 day with Top Gun “Danger Zone” guy and dying a little more on each leg, I put in my bid.

Good. Thank you for being the solution to your own problems and citing actual valid reasons to be annoyed with a CA. This whining back and forth about where you do your flight planning just goes to show that we have no bigger fish to fry and is a huge nothing burger. I just think that at this very unique point in airline history, where you can upgrade by being alive, complaining about a-hole captains seems like such an easy problem to solve. I love flying with FOs and complaining about boomerites as much as anyone, but I tend to lose interest in the conversation when I ask, "so when are you upgrading?" and the response is "oh, eff that I'm never going to upgrade." Well, then I guess you get to sit there and say you're ok with the fuel load should you get asked in the van *gasp*.

I don’t mind hugely either way, but it’s not unreasonable to want a few more minutes of personal time before we actually get to work.

I think it’s situational dependent. If skies are clear all the way from boring airport to boring airport, I don’t ask much of my FO’s on the van ride. However if I’m taking off out of RNO on a nasty day, I am making sure we are all on the same page for the different issues. If they don’t seem like they are wanting to participate, then fine it’s my leg, you go do the walk around, no problems. I do believe that getting into the books on your off time makes you a better and more professional pilot. So I have never personally bought into the “I only work when I’m at work” crowd.

From: 30 West
Was in the Caribbean, heading to EWR. On the van, CA pulls up the info. He mentions EWR is doing the whole circle to 29 thing due to the winds. Says we'll have to do all the briefings for that, etc.
Did I mention we were in the Caribbean? And that we're on the van? ETA is still like 4-ish hours away? Good thing he's getting spooled up NOW.
And, as everyone can guess, we weren't doing 29 when we arrived......
But man, good thing he was so ahead of the game.

Interesting story.
I've only landed 29 at EWR once in my career and that was when I was a contract captian for Air India on the 777-300ER. This was 2010 and we were on final for 22 and about two miles outside the marker after a ride from FRA when the controller asked if we wanted 29. I thought it would be fun to hand fly the approach so said yes. The controller then said to fly to the outter marker before breaking off and the extent of my brief to the 22 YO 500 hour wonder in the right seat was "we're landing 29". My motto has always been the best brief is a brief brief.

Yeah no relief pilot either. Nothing like being at 30 West by yourself with 350 pax riding behind you.
BTW...maybe some of you might be thinking why is the old guy lurknig here but my son fly's for you guys so I'm kind of living vicariously in between naps.
