I have mil and 121 experience.
Arrive in Den early on the day prior, especially with the govt shutdown uncertainty. Guy on my interview day had his flight delayed by 12 hrs on what would have been the last flight of the day going to Den. He was told too bad by the company when he tried to reschedule his interview.

Default Am I Competitive?

Hello, am I competitive?

1050 A320/1 SIC
2750 total time
0 TPIC
3 internal UA LORs, 2 from present employer
not spirit pilot
plenty of leadership experience in current and prior career/volunteer roles.

Feeling dejected and behind schedule seeing United hire so many pilots in short order as I’m 39 and understand the impact to seniority. Anyway, just wondering if I’m competitive? Have a chief pilot meet and greet in a few weeks.

Right now United is sort of being deluged by NK CAs facing downgrades with considerably more TT (and 320 time) than you have.

Attrition Skyrocketing

They also have the advantage (if you want to call it that) of being from a distressed ALPA union. While that supply is not inexhaustible, the worse the situation at NK becomes the more movement you will see in the most highly experienced portion of their pilots. While you clearly are qualified competition may be tough for awhile even though you are doing all the right things. Best thing you can do (at least in my opinion) is fly your butt off and gain more TT as quickly as possible.

As an aside, plenty of people get hired in their forties and have long rewarding careers. Seniority in a multi-type fleet is different than in a fleet that flys only one aircraft type.

A lot of recent data about people interviewing at UA.

Put your app in and have the hiring team determine that, not a board of random pilots and trolls.

Your numbers are low for the moment, especially the PIC time, but as hiring picks up, what is considered competitive will trend downwards.

Upgrade, fly your butt off, update your app, do interview prep. Rinse wash repeat.

Upgrade is most likely 2+ years away still.

But flight hours are as soon as your next bid. Are you maximizing block? Or soft time? There is nothing you can do about the total time of others applying to United or other majors. There is something you can do about your total time. And hours matter. 3000 hrs TT won’t guarantee you’ll beat the competition but 2750 hours means you are EASILY in the bottom 10% - maybe even 5% - of legacy applicants and attracts negative notice.

Seeing all the talk about lack of Vacancies.. did United cut their hiring numbers for next year? Sorry if that’s a dumb question. I know things are highly fluid in the industry.

As far we* know, United is still planning on hiring 2000+ next year. The CRU may have been a little vague. Pretty much we all expect more captain vacancies going forward, just maybe not 200 at a time. More like regular smaller ones of 40-80.

*we as in regular non management lien pilots
