First off, fff, coming on here and calling people "dumbasses" really says a lot about you and your character. I'm not impressed. I have a captain friend here at CAL who looks very young and a few years ago he was in civilian clothes in one of our weather rooms when a senior F/O came in and started giving him a rash of crap and kept insinuating he was just a "lowly commuter pilot" . This captain kept his composure and just "went along with it". The next day, this SAME F/O showed up to work and guess who his captain was? Yep..........the same guy he belittled the day earlier. Poetic justice? Be careful who you call names/insult on this forum........it's a small world and could come back to haunt you someday. FWIW, I see and talk to a lot more CAL pilots than you do, so I do think I'm a bit more qualified to say something concerning them than you are.

I hear so many pilots whining about getting a "huge pay raise" and "industry leading rates" but cannot find anyone spelling out exactly WHY they deserve (command) them. When my son was 5 or 6 years old, he used to bemoan the fact that his older brother had "more than him" and that it wasn't fair. Later, he bemoaned the fact that his brother was always getting on base when he struck out. Eventually he learned that he must be a "performer" if he expected to get to the top. HE GREW UP!
IAH FLYR is a smart man. He is on to something and others simply call him names. The fact of the matter is that UAL pilots HELPED drive their company into BK with C2000. It wasn't the sole reason, but a contributor nonetheless. UAL pilots are burnt out. They DO DESERVE A BIG RAISE, IMHO (if they can/will command it). However, they cannot really tell you why. Somebody on here said that C2000 was a good starting point.
BULL $HIT ! ! !
You want more for mgmnt to beat you up with when the economy gets even nastier? Sorry, but airline pilots can't get paid $325K/yr and work 5-7 months out of the year.
IT'S JUST NOT, NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!
You want GOOD, TOP rates? Get your pathetic union to divide the work evenly among the pilot group, pay to seniority for about 5 years, then have all pilots have the same (or near-same) QOL. Because, let's face it, they're doing the same job!
But ALPA will NOT do that! They will find a way to take care of their bread and butter pilots (SENIOR DUDES). They ALWAYS figure out a way to do just that.
Mark my words!
Best,
JD

You want to do away with seniority under a seniority based system?

Just asking?

iahflyr,
Excellent points! UAL pilots helped drive themselves into BK. Some will NEVER admit it because they are like children. They want it all, they want it now, and they want it because....well, just BECUZ ! ! !
Sadly, most UAL pilots have failed to think for themselves and have gone along with everything ALPA has told them.
Don't forget, C2000 was not a huge failure because of the pay rates. It was a huge failure becasue the pilots produced VERY LITTLE under the work rule language of that pathetic contract!
Yes, you are on to something! NEVER abandon your ideals. Never let a union or a company tell you how or what to think!! Good job!

777 & 400 captains were getting top dollar using vac override and sick drops. This equated to about 300-325K/yr while flying only 6-7 months out of the year. It's a fact.

Would like to use seniority for only about 5 years to make sure a pilot is really committed to the company. After that, the field should be leveled. IMHO

Were you at United in 2000?? I'm really curious. They got an industry leading raise (wasn't it 48%) and were making ridiculous amounts of money. What happened there? The company was forced to give them something they couldn't afford, and what happened?
I am not always pro union. I pay my dues and I support being a unified pilot group. But I hate it when renegade people make unreasonable demands. The fact is our quality of life is the best when the company is doing well. I want the new United to do well. We make damn good pay as major airline pilots. We don't need a 30% raise on top of that just cause. I'd rather our company pay what other companies pay for the exact same job, and let our company be competitive. When the new United does well, we will benefit.
I want a raise similar to what Delta/Northwest got. I want to be compensated well, but not out of line with our biggest competitors (Delta, American, US Air). Otherwise, this contract may last for maybe 2 years just like UAL 2000 did, and then we'll have to suffer the consequences... Those who fail to learn from the mistakes of the past are due to repeat those mistakes in the future.

I hope ALPA can get that for us

Did you work for United and were you one of these guys?
If not I would like to hear first hand from a UAL 777 or 747 captain from 2000.

So Under your scenario what happens after 5 years when MGT makes some bad financial decisions which requires a furlough?
The seniority system Commits the Pilot to the Company. If I could leave Company A after 5 Years and go to Company B and make the same $$ without a PAY or QOL cut, you would see Pilots jumping ship. In other words there would be no loyalty whatsoever. Of course the way many Airline MGTs have dealt with their employees, not just Pilots, Loyalty has gone the way of the Dinsoaur.
