Another part to that question...
How far through the United furlough list have they gotten with job offers?

600 letters sent so far. As of Nov 1st they have classes filled thru 2nd Jan 2012 class. Due to the sloppy way first round was done there will be some who bypassed first round who get in before any future/junior pilots are offered. CN said that they will be going at it as to deliberately fill 1 class at a time moving forward. Next round of letters possible late Nov.

There have been a lot of move up date possibilities. If you watch your e-mails after you receive a class date, you can move up considerably. I was told that I would be in the Dec 27th class and am now in the Nov 15th class.

Also, if you want to jockey backwards in dates, CN has been very accomodating.

FWIW, I'm in the 1/24 class and CN made it clear that moving back was only an option with a verified need. In her words:

"the bar has been raised to allow for the adjustments to later classes to a documentable reason, being it military obligation, financial contract, something other than, just to improve seniority for bidding aircraft and base. It created some challenges for earlier classes."

Last I heard:

"Classes are scheduled through the middle of March to fill the 178 slots from the last vacancy bid."

That will just about be the time they need to start thinking about backfilling for mandatory retirements in Dec.

Probably go down 700-750 to get the 178 they need now.

The question now is what will the Jan bid hold for Age 65 effects (if any) and what will all the United guys do with sick time next summer?

Jobs at CAL and UAL depend on that and many other factors.

IMO CAL will be hiring pilots continuously for several years. Age 65, rest rules, 787 ramping up, and at some point a joint contract that will absolutely not have CAL work rules in their entirety. Any change to a CAL work rule towards a UAL work rule or better will require more pilots on the property.
