PS> Iv'e always loved the Whale. Classic looking airplane.. and there must be a niche market for them on certain routes. Was hoping we'd order a dozen or so -8's, but not looking like it anymore~ oh well..
NW/DL was the launch customer of the 744, so at best they just as old as the UAL ones. DL birds do not have the international wifi the UAL ones do have. UAL began updating the cabins to be lie flat in 2008 with four class service. DL replaced the angle lie flat seats with lie flat a year ago and more recently also added Y+ service and AVOD at every seat.

FWIW, UAL had installed lie-flat cubicles on the 747-400 in first class prior to 9/11. I specifically recall a very nice ride on N128UA LAX-AKL in seat 1A when the aircraft was few months old in the fall of 2000.

The current UA 747 config in the 3rd version for first class, 2nd version for business class, and the first real update for economy (other than adding E+). Goes to show where UAL puts their priorities on that aircraft and who pays the freight.

UAL has 747-400s less than 13 years old, so they aren't going anywhere soon.

UAL parked the older 747s over the last 12 years.

It would seem that Delta's Whales are older than United's..
So it will be interesting to see who retires their fleets first. Though, LUAL stated that the A350/B787 order (original) was for fleet replacement.

Always thought that the Whale made tons of money on Cargo.. but then again, we're not a cargo airline~

You're right.. the youngest one was delivered on 12th May, 2000. Though, the oldest was delivered on 30th June, 1989.

Trust me, I want to see them flying as long as possible (and no, it's not because I want a seat on the Whale~)
All metal flown by mainline pilots is a good thing. Aircraft sent to the boneyard without a like replacement is a bad thing.

Politics make you say/do some strange things. Remember who's vote you're trying to get. SARKEY is not equal to a 400.

What improvements over the JCBA do you think we would have achieved by voting it down? Any guess as to the time it would have taken given the Jeff and CAL side had not desire for a contract?
With all due respect, I think you underestimate Jeff. He didn't expect or want the JCBA to fail. Why do you think you guys have been whipsawed so much the last three years? IMHO, management's plan from the start was to screw over the larger subsidiary so a majority of pilots would feel compelled to vote in a sub-standard contract.

I know there's been a lot of talk about Pierce being the puppet master who manipulated the JCBA negotiations for our SLI benefit. Maybe that's true to an extent (I honestly don't know), but Pierce has been playing checkers while Jeff Smisek was playing chess. Ignore him at your peril.

I don't think JP is a puppet master but more a puppet. Never underestimated Jeff at all - he's controlled JP from day one. The sub-standard contract you refer to, is that, but had the UAL side not voted it in the whip-sawing would have continued. At least we all suffer the same pain under the same contract. Could be an incentive to pay attention next time and not allow your elected leaders make your decisions for you. Jeff choose CAL as the whip because of history and he knew JP would go along with him.

Just as reference this contract did more to help the CAL side. It brought you guys up to the industry standard and will give you a better QOL. You're welcome.
