We discontinue NRT-HKG service

Posted August 30, 2013

We are exiting NRT-HKG (Hong Kong) service with the last operation on Oct. 26, 2013. The change will be loaded in SHARES on Aug. 31. We will re-accommodate affected customers on other airlines or provide refunds.
While we have made this decision because of the segment’s poor financial performance, we continue to monitor opportunities for profitable service in the
Asia-Pacific region.

I believe all the high yield customers on this route re-accommodated themselves upon the route going to a 737. Funny how UAL never shed this route despite: The 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, 9/11, SARS, Chapter 11, the 2008 global financial crisis, and so on. But now it just doesn't work. You're going to love the changes.....

Gordo was right. You can make a pizza so cheap nobody wants to buy it.

But you gotta love how announcements like this are made on a Friday afternoon prior to a long holiday weekend.

Gee...isn't that the same airline that used to use narrow bodies (757s and later A320s) for "regional" flying out of NRT?

You suppose, say, a Pan Am piolt ever uttered those exact words long ago upon losing yet another route to a competitor?

Do you even realize what you're saying? As much as I don't like that we're pulling out of a Market, your first post said we (UAL) NEVER did this with SARS, Asian financial crisis or UAL's bankruptcy! Did you ever think that keeping some of these routes is WHY you were in Bankruptcy?! And I would ask a Pan Am pilot but, their business plan went BANKRUPT so why would I? Why didn't you post when they applied for the LAX-CHU? route! (Block hours go way up swapping those two routes, I think?)

Ehh, no. I simply pointed out that this particular route survived a number of challenges over the last 15 years until it was decided recently to down-gauge the service. As a result, the high yield traffic which makes most any international route viable voted with their feet. Our US competitor on that route, who also went through bankruptcy, now has us out of that market entirely. By the way, do you know what you are saying? Block hours go up far more if we add new routes while maintaining the old ones. The reference to Pan Am is apt when you consider our industry bottom margin performance right now.

Actually we did not serve NRT-HKG for several years. We pulled some of the tag flying out of NRT and reinstated some of the city pairs. I believe TPE was the other city pair we dropped and resumed.

Here is the press release for the "New" service with the 737. So it actually didn't stand the test of time and other world calamities. Not saying I am not sorry to see it go. Just that we have not had continuous service on this route.

United Continental Holdings announced the launch of a daily flight between Hong Kong and Tokyo-Narita from October 31, 2011.

Continental Airlines will operate the new service with a two-class Boeing B737-800 aircraft, offering passengers a total of 155 seats: 14 business class and 141 economy class.

The flight will depart Hong Kong International Airport at 1030, arriving in Tokyo at 1540. The return leg will depart Tokyo at 1705, arriving back in Hong Kong at 2115.

United Airlines had previously served this route, before the merger with Continental, but dropped it a few years ago due to the scarcity of time slots at Tokyo Narita. Now, as United Continental Holdings reenters this market, it will face fierce competition from other carriers, including Cathay Pacific, All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines (JAL), which all serve this route more than seven times per week therefore offering their passengers more flexibility.

Tickets for flights are already available for sale. For more information and bookings, visit United Airlines ? Airline Tickets, Travel Deals and Flights on united.com or United Airlines ? Airline Tickets, Travel Deals and Flights on united.com
