What's wrong with hiring F/O's?
Per the description, they have 8+ years of regional experience. Not exactly "unqualified" or "newbies" as you seem to suggest. Being a Captain doesn't automatically make one a better pilot or candidate.

Well you can always bid up if there are vacancies. No 2 year seat lock for bidding up, only down or lateral. There still may be some 756 spots in April, nothing is certain until its in the past in this business. If you got the 73, a lot of the ewr 73 flying is trans cons and Caribbean so you would still see a majority of longer flights. Not quite like the 756 but way better than regional flying. Good luck and see you in April!

The job we are hiring them for is to be an FO. Seems like they are more than qualified to be FOs.

We were told that we would be on reserve on the 756 for much longer than the 737 and a320 and that hiring on the 756 was basically done for that fleet at the end of March through at least the end of the year.
Bases and getting out west was a big factor for some.
Being able to make more money on the 73 and 320 was also a big factor.
The seat lock was what others, including myself would have preferred not to have.

Although I heard a rumor that they will be combining the 756/76T this summer, earlier than they planned. They would be slightly over staffed if they put EWR together

That would be great if iad took 756 ewr guys. I hope they keep hiring on the 756 for a long time. I need to get some seniority! Would be great to get towards the top of the reserves by the holidays and a line by second year pay! I'm not getting my hopes up though.

Good reasons. Shrinking fleet, chaos in the scheduling, no one knows if or when management will ever get their act together and decide what the fleet plan is--it changes often.
A bunch of really senior people on it will never move off unless they get a bump. Little to no movement--BAT fiasco, and bumps in certain domiciles.
And.....the pay isn't that different than the guppy. So why be stuck with reserve for a log time when you can have drastically better QOL quickly on the guppy?
