I'm guessing you mean the guppy fleet? Yeah, there's got to be a limit on this stuff.

Not the answer you're looking for, but it actually is a great way to run an airline.. Use short calls to maintain schedule integrity during an adverse weather event rather than misconnect thousands of passengers. The alternative, stranding thousands around the system during Christmas travel season and taking 4 days to dig out from the hole.

As I said, not the answer that any reserve wants to hear, but I think it's a prudent measure.

You know reasonable posts that are logical and well thought out are not approved on this board. You need to blame Jeffy, Jeffery, LIPS, Smallsack, Howie, T-Bird, make a negative stereotype comment about the L-XX pilot group, be sure to throw in a Sparky and Scabcab zinger and drop the mic.

Good post. To think the company wouldn't build SC's as a result of the DEN irrops is shortsighted. FAR117 has a lot to do with reserve short calls versus the previous iteration of rest rules. The meter running means the company is losing availability every minute after the SC start time.

With all the bids that have taken place anyone that is on reserve other than new hires have had bidding options to get themselves off reserve somewhere.

A couple of weeks ago on a Saturday there were 7 SC or FSB assigned to my fleet. I counted the departures from my base and it was 25 for the day. The WX was nice. Fast forward a couple of weeks and a big storm forcast for my base on a Sunday with about 50 departures. How many SC and FSB assigned? Thats right....none. Zero. nada. I dislike SC as much as anyone, but they do have a purpose. Assigning 3 SC within 3 hours of each other doesnt make much sense either.

I don't think most reserves have a problem with SCs. But many have a problem with the irregular and unpredictable and sometimes irrational build of SCs, sometimes clearly at the whim or ignorance or possibly even emotion of a scheduler. There needs to be a published logic and a transparency in the process. And more money, not simply to transfer more money to pilots, but to create a system whereby they are forced to weigh the monetary cost of assigning a SC against the ambient value of needing one assigned. Right now, the cost is clearly too low. An hour of add pay for every assigned SC, used or not, would be a start.

A couple months ago in EWR, they were building 16 SC's and 3 FSB's a day on the 737. It's a little out of control to have that many. I think they were doing it simply because they could. There was no bad weather, or anything else going on that I was aware of.

There needs to be some logic and limitations to the way they hand those assignments out.

Me personally? I have no problem with short calls as I live 35 minutes from the lot. Not the point I was trying to make. My point was how overstaffed we are on the guppy left seat in Denver. The fact that we have THAT many pilots to put on RSV. They could cover the schedule integrity with 20% less pilots as they prove daily in the right seat on the guppy here. I haven't flown since the week of Thanksgiving! FAT CITY baby.
So, no, it's not a great way to run an airline. It's a terribly wasteful way to run an airline. But I'll gladly collect my 76 x $211.
BTW, 300 flights are cancelled in Denver today. So much for not stranding folks.

The meter was ALWAYS running after the SC start time, before FAR 117, so I don't know what you're talking about. What are you trying to say...that under the old system a SC's duty day started when he showed for a trip? Absolutely false. Max duty day was determined from the start of the SC. Just like under FAR 117. True story. If you're gonna come on here talking about "reasonable posts", try to stay factual.

OH...and if your base shrinks by 300 pilots (about 1/3), you may get struck on RSV if you don't want to commute. Just a thought.

Just wait till they try to cover right seat trips with all the Captains sitting around. Its inevitable.
