Record Pilot Hiring and Aircraft orders

It was an LOA in the premerger UA contract. You will find somewhere in the LOA the exact wording 'Jets For Jobs'.
It's a fairly minor point as to the name of the program, but it required the regionals to hire x number of UAL furloughees for each new aircraft added. And yes, some of the regionals played games with the furloughees.
Can you name a single UAL furloughee that was a DEC CA at GoJets? I never heard about that offer, and I doubt any other furloughees heard of such a thing. I've kept in touch with a lot of furloughees and no one ever mentioned DEC positions for any US airline. There were some furloughees who took DEC positions overseas but that's an entirely different animal than we're discussing here.
I interviewed at SkyWest. There were ~a dozen of us furloughees interviewing the day I was there. We were even required to bring our logbooks, which the interviewers reviewed prior to our interviews.

I was furloughed in January 2010. I don't know if GoJets was part of the J4J program. They were hiring at the time and another furloughed guy called me and said GoJets was offering a left seat during the interview. I faxed in a resume and got a phone call within 30 minutes. I showed up to the interview a week later to check it out. There was an ATA guy in the training department that came and said hello. The interview was with a young guy that said he didn't have any questions for me and was I available to start soon. I asked about the The left seat and he insisted I was interviewing for a right seat position. I told him I was under the impression that they were hiring DECs or at least had some sort of Lance Captain program. He said that was no longer an option that was being considered. I said I wasn't interested in an FO position. A week later, I got an offer letter in the mail and a study package.
I never followed up with a question to ask what the offer was for. I know a handful of guys that went and they were used as a sort of lance captain until their seniority could hold captain.

While I was laid off in 2002, I wasn't looking for a job until 2004/5 timeframe. I was either too junior to be offered a job at a regional (too many furloughees senior to me) or the regionals didn't need anyone by then.

There is no pilot shortage, just a shortage of pilots who are willing to work for slave wages and crappy work rules.
If RAH goes belly up, then that's what needs to happen based on its economic performance and that's just survival of the fittest. Long term, if we want to raise the bar for all airlines, then we need to raise the bar across the board. Those smaller carriers who are either unwilling,or unable to raise the bar must compete for labor. If perspective pilots aren't attracted to the job the way a moth is attracted to a flame, then the seats will be empty and there will be a staffing problem. A persistent staffing problem is unsustainable.
Pilots want to be able to both raise their families and they want to receive a return on their investment. The raising of the bar is about 10 years behind schedule. If we want to attract more pilots to the profession, then the profession needs to be "attractive" to them, short term, mid term, and long term in their career expectations.

I agree with you that the bar is being raised about a decade too late, but it looks like it's rapidly moving higher. And if Republic's short on pilots like they say, they're not going to be able to cut pay. As it is, their attrition rate will likely increase because of the BK filing.

I'm pretty sure the Republic pilots recently got a new contract; the rates don't look that bad. Year 1 FO is $40/hr with a signing bonus.
