I’m still pretty new here but I have seen shrinkage through attrition in a past life. Does it look like ONT is going that way or it is just me? I’m sure there will be some backfill but I’m surprised there were no vacancies with all the new people leaving ONT.

Can someone enlighten me on the “displacement” end of that statement please.

At some point, the MD fleet will shrink sufficiently that the number of pilots needed to fly it will be less than the number of pilots on the fleet. At that point a displacement bid will occur. If you are involuntarily displaced, and not on probation, you may be entitled to moving expenses and some other stuff. Presumably, there will be a new bright shiny jet on property by then that guys will want to bid over to. However, as anyone on property for a few years has realized by now, the MD has very low turnover among pilots. People bid on, but almost never leave. So who knows how it will play out.

I was told the MD would soon be removed from international flying, thus reducing the pilots needed on the fleet, even without parking any airframes. Something about the difficulty of distributing spare parts across the international destinations...

We were told that several years ago. Reality is that we will fly wherever there is money to be made. Spare parts support international is very thin.

Fedex flies their MDs everywhere. And have zero plans to stop flying them everywhere. I have no idea what their support system is, but the few friends I have on the MD never mention many MX issues.

Fedex is an airline doing a mediocre job with its trucking division. We are a trucking company doing a mediocre job it’s airline division. Their airline maintenance is run accordingly as is ours. Often that means an MD gets stuck due to the lack of spares at international gateways. I’m not complaining, I make a lot of money off that error.

The MD was removed from international service before the pandemic. It was put back on some international flights within the past few years because it was needed. I don’t look at MD lines so I’m not sure how much international flying it does now.
