Unlike most regionals, UPS has “professional reserves” in just about every F/S/D.

Some commuters choose reserve over lines for certain days on/off patterns, actually.

Crashpad is a good idea if commuting on probation IMO…hotels can work once you’re more senior depending on your situation.

I've been near the bottom as a Capt for the past 4 years on a few fleets. With the degradation of the lines on most fleets, I've found reserve to often be the best bad choice. I can usually hold the longer blocks which beats doing the dreaded base trip lines or the 3week on/1 off trips. I live with in 5+15 of sdf so I just drive in the afternoon before and at least get a nap before the 0001 call. It is a two leg commute off line or a one leg on company. I found it easier on the body to drive instead of commute in/out. Especially when you finish at 1200 on your last day and there are no flights out. I end up dead heading alot and usually get 4-5 days out of the 14 where I don't work. Reserve can suck when they start jerking your body clock around between morning turns and laying over during the day. You can't be afraid to use the fatigue card when they have you do things that would be non contractual if it were a line. I bought a crash pad last year that I stay in with a few buds. I should have bought one years ago. With a decent hobby and a gym membership reserve can be livable as a commuter.

Default additional questions

-How long after IOE does it take to hold a line 757/767 domestic?

-On the line for junior domestic guys how much is back side of the clock flying? I assume it's a very high percentage.

-How are the work rules?

-Can schedules reassign you for any reason? Any compensation for reassignments?

-I have heard on reserves they can extend you for two days and you have no say in the matter, true or false?

-Any estimation on how long it will take to be senior enough to hold commercial tickets to a trip?

Base Trip Lines (BTLs) - think of these as lines with many trips, all of which are <110hr TAFB - went as junior as 4 off the bottom of SDF 757 FO for the current schedule bid.

A majority of junior flying is what we consider Early Duty Window (EDW) or "backside of the clock", but there can be day flying available on BTLs.

-How are the work rules?
Depends on the perspective of who you ask. Some think they're pretty good, some think they're the bastard child of early 2000s Mesa and some late 90s nonsked.

-Can schedules reassign you for any reason? Any compensation for reassignments?
There are many contractual reasons that a crewmember could be rescheduled or have their trip extended, and many but not all of those reasons will generate a premium payment or possibly Late Arrival Pay.

-I have heard on reserves they can extend you for two days and you have no say in the matter, true or false?
Domestically, the Company can extend reserves into one day off, once per pay period, but the extension into a day off pays as Late Arrival Pay. There are some contractual restrictions on when/how a reserve can be extended into a day off.

-Any estimation on how long it will take to be senior enough to hold commercial tickets to a trip?
Some BTL trips have commercial deadheads.

This is a common misconception. They can not reassign you for any reason, they can reassign you for EVERY reason

There are currently a lot of 74 and MD captains getting late arrival on most of their trips. 1 guy I talked to was 5/6 of his last trips.

On the 74, if you’re not getting rescheduled you’re the rare exception

I tippy-toed and deviated off a ten day where the last three legs and four days were deadheads. The dudes I was flying with were astonished, it was like I'd hit the lottery. The whole last leg was betting on whether they'd ACARS me to call, or just catch me at the gateway. I think the deciding factor was that they forgot to list me for the P3s. Probably forgot that I existed.

So, with UPS overnighting aircraft in many cities, is it possible for commuters to get overnights at home? Similar to what ive heard Fedex call the long weekend. With the bidding system, does that basically make it impossible to get the same city on a regular basis?
