At 5 weeks I sent a email asking if I needed to reapply as I wasn't sure about the new year swap over. Later that day got the tbnt email and it was dated 2 weeks after my interview.
I also know a guy who waited 7 weeks for his pool letter.

Are they doing background checks or partial ones now before offering a pool letter? They didn't do anything on me until they called me for class. I had selected to be notified about pria requests on the forms ups sent and was in touch with my company's records person as well. Anyone in the current pool keeping tabs on this?
Sponsors: (and just for clarity) I've looked thru chief pilot hotlines and the bar and grill, haven't found any mention of an official sponsor program at Brown. I assume whale and 767 are loosely using the term to refer to UPS pilots who have written internal letters of recommendation and maybe making a few calls/emails to HR folk on behalf of their buds they are trying to get in.
My earlier suggestion to follow up with HR was specific to that guy's situation-a rare exception rather than the rule. In general, I side with whale and 76. I'll hold my ground, in this market anyway, on waiting too long as showing disinterest.

I was under the impression that a clear pre-employment drug screening was the only requirement in order to get a class date, and the PRIA was required before starting sim training. Does anyone know what UPS policy is?

First off, I absolutely disagree with not contacting them if it's been more than a few weeks. They are a small staff that are very busy. I have anecdotes but, trust me. Send a nice email to Angie or whoever gave you their card when you interviewed, and I promise it won't cost you your job. They'll likely thank you for contacting them.
They do need the drug screen before you can go to class. They send out the requests once they give you a conditional offer. Your current airline has 30 days to respond.

I should've been more specific.
So what's the "proper" way of checking up on someone's status?
I don't know? I'm simply being cautious. Maybe too cautious?
This might be a potential multi-million dollar job offer and I'd be nervous about screwing it up. In "previous life" I worked with recruiting at 3 smaller airlines. I'd attend a job seminar of some kind every three months or so, be it AIRINC (I just dated myself), WAI, OBAP, NGPA, FAPA or a few smaller, regional job recruiting functions.
..and the HR departments were always short-staffed and always working their behinds off. Some of the recruiters would get very frustrated when recent interviewees called to check up on their status.
I realize things might be different at ups and maybe they don't mind? I figured a sponsor (current ups pilot who's recommending someone) would be a much safer bet. Job fairs are pretty safe too, that's what they do for a living.
An email probably wouldn't hurt either but personally I'd wait a while longer.
Again, I don't know what the secret code is? I simply believe that this job is too important for someone to get too impatient. So my recommendation is simply what I'd have done if I were in his or her shoes. YMMV.
I think we both agree that we want them all to succeed!

I believe that's correct. PRIA requirement before sim training applies to all airlines, not just ups. (post 9/11 rule)

You're correct, when I said a "sponsor" I meant a current ups pilot who's written an internal recommendation for someone.
