I'm not vbd but I'm positive you get 24/7 per diem, hotel and (sometimes) your own rental car. You can also opt out of the hotel if, for example, you end up in a base where you have family and company will pay you half (someone confirm?) of what they would have spent in the hotel.

Exactly what Astaz said... It means the last few new hire classes were loaded with GRR. Over the next 3-4 months, as vacancies come open, they will bail. Meaning when the January/February classes bid for DSM/New Base 21/New Base 22, there will be some GRR thrown in with ABE etc.

Yes, VBD pilots are basically permanent TDY pilots and are treated as such. You get 24/7 per diem and a hotel. Some domiciles are given rental cars for every pilot, some have shared rental cars, and some have no rental cars. If you choose not to use the hotel, you can elect to get paid half of the amount the company would have spent on the hotel instead.

I know you didn’t ask, but VBD pilots bid per their seniority, just as if they were actually based in the domicile they end up in each month. Some senior VBD pilots can bounce around bases and end up bidding very senior and get great schedules. It’s great for them, but very frustrating for the folks who have permanently bid into a base with constant VBD’s. They would be senior if not for the VBD guys coming in and bumping them down.

I have also experienced that but on the flip side of that coin, if there are TDY/VBD’s into a base for more the 3 bid periods then a vacancy will be posted.

VBD gets 24/7 per diem, hotel, and 2 deadhead days (to/from their home to the vbd city). Rental car is only in Destin.

A lot of people don't like vbd, but the alternative is getting tyd'd for 4 months a year when you're junior. It still happens a little, but it would be a lot worse like the old days without vbd. Just ask anyone who was around more than 5 years ago.

How much movement is there in SFB and PIE? Relatively easy to get within a short time out of training? What about again for upgrade?

I appreciate your insight.

Both are relatively easy to get right out of training, SFB more so than PIE. About 35 slots went to new hires in the last few months for both bases combined so there will most likely be some shuffling around in the next few bids. As far as upgrade in SFB/PIE, I would guess at least 15+ years for a new hire today, while it could be about 1/4 that time in a new base. Both of those bases are pretty close to maxing out logistically, with no overnights there is no space to park additional SFB/PIE based planes at night. Those bases will continue to grow but with outside turns from newer bases up north.

If you want to upgrade in Orlando much sooner, take a look at NK, they are planning to grow their MCO base from 150 crews to 500-600 in the next few years with that new large order of planes they just inked.

I doubt 15 years is accurate, even for BLI (although, the junior CA used to be a revolving door). However, new hires won't be senior in PIE or SFB basically forever...

As far as space goes, last summer PIE had 12/13 planes and 55 FOs. Now it has 8/9 planes and high 30s FOs. I would definitely say there is a little room to beef back up in PIE. Although, it probably won't happen while the runway is under construction, so over a year from now.

Only 25% of us will retire in the next fifteen years.
On top of that, attrition is very low here, and from the bottom third of the seniority list... I say 15 years is not that far off.
