It's an MD-80...... When in doubt about a power source question, always answer DC Emergency. You'll be right 90% of the time.

Our work rules state that if you're on reserve and your the first AM person before a day off, that you are automatically released if you haven't been called 8 hours after your window opens.
My question is how can I see if I'm the earliest person for the day?

If you're on R9 I would call scheduling or sift through Merlot person by person through that Find Crew button. Then select the date and then select each pilot through the drop down menu.
Giant pain in the backside compared to the old AIS but hey thanks for being flexible.

Just tried the find crew option but two of us aren't listed in the drop down menu. Any work arounds besides calling CS?

Those two have chosen not to post their schedules. I would call them personally if I were you and ask if they would do that so that you can avoid calling scheduling.
Beyond that you're left with actually calling scheduling.

Don't call crew services! The work rule says that you are auto released at 8 hours "if not extended by crew services". You are gonna call them and think they WON'T extend you?! They will.

Do you know if there is a guide for all these Merlot codes?

Some maintaining of a little perspective might be nice, once in a while. This individual's bust had very little to do with the training department. As a matter of fact, the May class got managed to get through with no issues in the oral, most of whom exceeded expectations...and some of whom are still available helping the new class. Since everyone is throwing about speculation on this instance, try this one on for size...the individual showed up with a type already, didn't put in the effort required and was subsequently smacked about. One of the newest guys in the training department would be loathe to send forward a new hire ill equipped for that oral, particularly since he knew the evaluator and knew what was required.

Whatever problems the feds have with our training department, going after newhires is not the solution. From what I have heard about at least one is that he was real strong. Knew his systems well but was given an oral that most would be hard pressed to pass. Pink slipping pilots will not fix corporate issues. As usual we carry the burden and the blame for this place.

Compare this type of scrutiny and failure rate to our like carriers. I don’t think anyone has to see the exact numbers. The feds are coming after new hires to show due diligence. Because it’s the easiest path. The real problems are so ingrained, it would require another shutdown.

Hang on, who are the bad guys? (Maybe my brain is not engaged.)
