Been there, done that, have the T-shirt!! I was hired at UPS in 95, 3 days into basic indoc I turned down United. I did my $26,000 the first year, it sucked, had to sell my Vette....then second year rolls around and I think it was around $44K and we started negociations...the same crap as now except in my opinion alot more rhetoric from both sides. I began to take the companies positions personally, To me it seemed as though the company was insulting me at each low ball proposal. My buddy at United was hired the same time frame I would have been...He was flying out of New York (Home for me) making $85K and He had stock options from the ESOP valued at over $78K!!!! I was very ****ed! Here we were just trying to make industry standard, and the company was ****ting on us. Then I flew with an old wise Captain and He shed some light on the situation.
UPS doesn't hate us, Management does'nt despise us...Its just business...let the negociators work it out and in the end we'll get most of what we want, and go back to work! Fred Smith bluffed his pilkots last time and they folded bad. UPS is not your friend or buddy, you work for them, as long as they pay me well and treat me fairly I'm OK with that. If you want to go to work and sing "Kum-Bai=Ya" go to Southwest or Jet Blue. I'm positive FED-EX is not a whole lot different. I'm in the reserves and alot of my friends fly for all of the majors, and they all ***** and moan about their employers, and think the grass is always greener. Good Luck with your decision...either way you chose its a winner...

[QUOTE=To Stay or Go]Actually becoming a mgt pilot at UPS would rank somewhere between being a gay TV prostitute and a Bangkok *****.

I've been to Bangkok and that made me laugh my arse off. LBFM!!

TSOG--Sounds as if you were hired before me, so please go! I had heard 120k for second year, but evidently nobody really knows. We'll just have to trust the union and plug along.

The IPA negotiated the $26,000 first year pay scale. The company was willing to pay a lot more in 1997-98. The IPA fattened the wallets of the Cpts., so someone had to suffer.

Comparing UPS' hourly rate to FDX's is like comparing apples and oranges. If you're strictly looking at money, I think looking at annual guarantee pay with minimum days off is a better comparison. I have no idea what those numbers are. However, UPS first year pay is abysmal no matter how you look at it! You aren't the first new hire to leave (or consider leaving) over first year pay and you won't be the last.

Like someone else said, this contract stuff is just business, nothing personal. Life will improve once this gets resolved. I would not expect negotiations to be any different at FDX.

If you really feel you're getting the shaft from both UPS and the IPA, I would leave. It sounds like you've already made up your mind anyway. Whatever you do, use your head and not your heart. I know someone who followed his heart in 1998 and went to UAL. We all know what happened there. Best of luck, whatever you decide!

I would go to FDX. More retirements, better facilities(Hands Down), Cml. to work-No company Deadheading, and better pay. The problem is, in 1996, the people in power at the IPA-CAPTAINS-, wanted an A plan. And the FO's and FE's got railroaded. The slope of pay, that B. miller was fully aware of, is 59.00 dollars!!!!! The IPA shafted all junior pilots at UPS. That's the Facts. And I feel it's going to happen again. We are not in power at the IPA. My friend was hired at UAL in 1995, he was making 196 an hour as a sixth year FO, I was hired in 1994, making 98 an hour. If FDX called, I would have left. And they may respect you a little.

If you want my honest opinion and it's soon to be 16 years plus worth pack you bags as soon as humanly possible. I truly enjoy my job, the vast majority of folks I work including most managers,, even "8menoutl"..I have a strong idea who this person is.. , but working for UPS hasn't changed in 16 years. They are still a gropu of greedy bastards that will stop at nothing to beat you down and steal from you. The days odf a large company caring about you as an employee are over. The problem is they never have. If you get a chance read my thread in the flighttimes regarding FEDEX and jumseating. If my article is small picture of their overall corporate structure it will be the best decision you will ever make. Lastly, I am a IOE instructor on the A300 and if you are one of my students please contact me and even if not I would like to chat with you before you go. Best wishes and do not look back.
Cheers,
CW

Just a my .02 I wouldn't look at job just for the pay. I'd look at the overall picture. I love working at FedEx and honestly I've enjoyed almost every flight since I've been there. All in all it's a great place to work. Sure we have some problems but I've never thought about leaving once. If it's only the pay that you're unhappy about, stay. But if you hate showing up for work due to the attitude of the company, I'd leave, especially if you've already got a class date.

FLAT OUT WRONG! UPS IS responsible for the $26,000 first year pay! The company should be EMBARASSED for this CRIME! The IPA has NO imput into first year probationary pay! This one is wholely owned by our big BROWN!
