True, but remember that salary is negotiated, while profit sharing is not. In good times it'll be a nice bonus, but in not-so-good times, it might not be a player at all. Just sayin'.

I think salary AND profit sharing are both negotiated, just one is fixed and one is variable.

The variable one, while it might be negotiated, is also usually dependent on what management perceives as having been a "good" year. Therefore, one cannot hang their hat on, nor expect a certain amount of money to be placed, annually, in their account. Therefore it's hard to compare a known value with an unknown.

And ... 8% of a money losing year equals ??? ... Is it possible that the employee profit sharing could be a negative amount (as in, you have to give money back to the Corporation)?

I've still got stock certificates from a previous airline framed in my bathroom (sort of like wall paper) ... just sayin!

Regarding paying back the Company during a losing year, are you serious!?!?! While not a Delta, I had profit sharing at a previous company, you just don't get a profit sharing check during loses. Thus the name, profit sharing.

I'm perfectly happy here, and I think I'd be perfectly happy at Delta, the original poster has received a lot of good advice on the forum. I'd vote for us, but he's got a tough choice and it comes down to personal preferences. I don't think anyone can go wrong with either company.

One thing though, a lot of assumptions are made that the Major Passenger airlines, (Delta, American, United) are going to lose money during the next recession. I'm not so sure they are going to repeat past history. I think they will be more like Southwest has historically been and just make less money. Don't forget, Delta and Northwest were profitable airlines prior to and even after the Deregulation Shootout of the late 70s and 80s. I could be wrong on the future though, just my opinion.

Besides, all airlines, including us are just one Management Team away from misery.

Its PROFIT sharing, you don't pay back to a company profit not made.

OKLATX , at times NWA was profitable but I can tell you that I took several pay cuts during the period from the 70's thru 2004 . It was feast or famine and if I was a new guy starting out now I would save a lot more than I did back then. Hard times will come.

Any pay cut in the 1970's would have been as a result of being furloughed or downgraded (i.e. bumped from 727FO back to 727SO). I cannot recall any airline pilot group taking a cut in contractual pay scales until a few years after Deregulation Act passage in the early 1980's.

You are right now that I think about it. The pay cuts and airline bankruptcies started in the 80's . My point was that OKLATEX seems to think that the Majors will never lose money again . I suppose because they have gotten the competition down to a manageable level. I sure hope that is true but I have my doubts .

But its all a guess. Having an option at a mainline carrier or UPS or FedEx is the first step. After that, its all a crapshoot. And the salaries at all should be enough for someone to save money and not have to worry about the hard times, other than furlough.
