Seems to be willing to make a go of it with old EMB 135s and 145s, rehabbed and now limited to only 30 pax.

Clearly they have a different idea than you if what is economically feasible.
Look at the destinations and origins, those are high value markets in a key segment. It’s also worth noting the volume is nowhere that of a typical regional operation. A 550 flying into Aspen is going to have 10 people willing to pay for 1st class. A 550 flying into Evansville, not so much.

The 550 is not the moonshot people are making it out to be. True enough it has a market where it can make a great return. But it’s not a 200 replacement, it’s a stop gap/ bluff hoping that UALPA will blink and give some type of scope relief.

If UAL offers furlough protection through a flow down then the decision will be easy.
Our current contract forces the company to convert all 76 seaters to 70 seats if we furlough. Not a flow down protection but it’s a costly form of protection. And in this environment a lot, and I mean A Lot, has to go south to induce furloughs. Not saying it can’t/won’t happen but most of us are willing to take our chances. No scope erosion on either end.

Historically speaking, ALL airlines have a ridiculously low success rate. Just ask the PanAm, TWA, and Braniff guys - among very many others.

The major airlines use a hub a spoke system which means most of the passengers connected into the hub from a spoke on an aircraft that probability wise offered a first class ticket. Said first class passenger will now have first class throughout their travel experience. The lack of first class is the reason a different airline has said they want to end the 50 seater.
O&D hub traffic to EVV already gets a premium for economy.
