They directed the captain to declare. There was NO emergency except for the possibility of Compass going bankrupt due to fines. Which at the end of the day I hope they do still get fined for this idiotic stunt.

The Tarmac Delay Program gives the captain discretion when passenger safety in at issue.

The Chicago media also said our plane had an engine fire at the gate in MDW just because it had two fire trucks parked next to it. But there was no such fire. Don't put faith in what you read in news.

The way I interpret it (the actual ACARS) was dispatch declared and directed the pilot to relay the declaration over the radio while blowing the slides.

And you think you're the only one with the picture? Good luck being a puppet if you think blindly following that is smart.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't we have planes on the ground for more than 3hrs during the Delta melt down a few months ago? I don't recall and doors being blown then...what makes this any different from that one?

Which way makes more of point to Compass, the public (news sources), and the FAA? Taking ANOTHER 3+ hour DOT fine or blowing the slides and creating scene? Hopefully now things will actually change and stairs (at a minimum) will be made available at airports.

Regardless if no emergency exists no emergency authority exists. Passengers on a climate controlled airplane for 4 plus hours is not an emergency! In fact passengers are on airplanes for 15 plus hours every single day.

A captain can delegate everything he/she wants except for ultimate responsibility. You are ultimately responsible for the safety and care of your passengers. In addition our SMS clearly empowers us all to stop any operation from continuing in the interest of safety.

Let's all remember as airmen here the duty we have to our passengers and crew members. SOC can not order you to do anything that is not fundamentally not the safest course of action.

This is a black eye on our reputation but also a great learning experience on what it means to be a leader and a captain.

I agree. I checked the FOM and I don't see anywhere in there that says, declare an emergency when on the ground for more than 3hrs!
