At the regional level I'd say that's true. However, I know several FAs at the majors that are making regional Captain salary in their late 30s and bidding half the month off. Granted, they have upwards of 12-15 years seniority though.

I think the point is bro culture does not equal good CRM, dude. The person posted it immediately following a bromance about doing 5-6000FPM.

This made me laugh....it was entered for a Darwin award.

A. They were climbing, we're talking about descending.

B. We are obviously joking and having a bit of fun to lighten this thread up a bit, but way to kill it

In all seriousness though, the training department or on IOE training, they must teach full use of the speed brakes...all the time. Slow 10 knots... use full speed brakes. Descend to 3000' 20 miles from the marker... use full speed brakes and FLCH. People need to take it easy with those. Shakes the heck out of the plane and most of the time, unnecessary.

Maybe that's a new thing they are teaching. Historically I've experienced the opposite... People who are too timid to through the boards out. Sure it's bumpy, but the pax would rather bounce around a minute then have to spend an extra 15 from a go around.

That's why I put the gear down instead of giving up on skill/planning and using the speed brakes.

Goodness gracious, wasn't trying to start a mindless speedbrake argument.... sorry but this statement is idiotic "instead of giving up on skill/planning and using the speed brakes." The speedbrake is a tool of the airplane, it was put there for a reason, knowing how to use it is part of planning, just like using the gear. Now I understand not flying around all the time with the brakes out just like you wouldn't with the gear, but I get sick and tired of hearing about people getting their hands slapped by speedbrake nazzis who think their method is superior to all. Fly it how you want and back off.

I agree for the most part, but the "we didn't crash and didn't get violated, so it's all good" attitude continues the decline of airmanship. Asked to slow to 20 knots in a descent on an RNAV...of course you'll probably need the boards. Asked to slow 20 knots while getting vectors off the arrival, there's no reason for FLCH or boards. It's not elegant. It's not efficient. I'll say something.

Fly it how you want, as long as it makes sense and you can explain why you're doing whatever it is you're doing.
