1. Slightly different virus (mutation).
2. Treatment protocols have been changed/improved.
3. Quality/availability of care decreases once hospitals/ICUs overflow. (increases mortality) ...and that takes time.

Actually a face shield is almost completely uselss by itself. Its supposed to be worn in conjunction with a mask.

The primary vector of transmission is hands to the face, Covid isn't airborne, it spreads through droplets. Face shields block almost 100% of droplets reaching a possible place where the virus can enter the body. Wearing a mask improperly, like 98% of people, is actually increasing the spread, especially increased touching of the face without washed hands.
