This is correct. Increases in perdiem would be tax free up to feds allowance and since no more deductions on shortfalls this seems like a no brained.
Also what about holiday pay override? Then you have people who want holiday flying to bid it vs avoiding it and praying for greensslips.

I also think we should cost out the per diem cost relative to hourly rates and take our raise there sobe it is tax free. How about a housing allowance too? Same concept of costing it from hourly rate

Holiday pay! It probably costs something, but huge QOL gain for everyone; either getting more money or getting off the days you want. I think time and a half would be enough to do the trick. My understanding is FAs already get it so it's not like it is something foreign to management.

[QUOTE=captkdobbs;2545234]With the loss in 2018 of the business deductions for things like uniforms, uniform maintenance and 'uncompensated per diem', I like the idea of a monthly uniform allowance and bumping per diem to the government level or better.
The max GSA per diem rate for CONUS cities (2018) is $74, max MIL rates are $88 for AK and $128 for HI.
That means $3.10/hr should be the MINIMUM for domestic and $3.60/hr should be the MINIMUM for international.
My personal opinion is that this is not enough to actually cover healthy meals in airports and around hotels. The intent of per diem is to reimburse us for Meals, Incidentals & Expenses while away from home on business.[/QUOTE
Per Diem is generally paid to cover the extra expense of eating on the road verses at home. It’s not paid by most companies to cover the entire expense. Regardless you lose at least 30% taking money as per Diem vice income because it’s not pensionable or eligible for PS.

Let's not set an expectation of 15% PS as far as the eye can see...or even through one full contract cycle. That could disappear quite quickly, unlike DC.

True, and the DC (pensionable) benefit versus per diem dollars fades away quickly as pilots max out anyway. Aside from first year pilots and special cases here or there, who isn't maxing out in the first place?

Housing allowances are taxed as ordinary income. Only the military gets that tax free. Per Diem can only go up a small amount before it’s taxed. A reserve pilot who does not fly much may not like the concept. Same for a pilot on sick leave. In addition it’s not pensionable or eligible for profit sharing so you lose 30% give or take before the tax break.
But holiday pay!

HilariousI'm all for pre-boarding, but you gotta be realistic about some of these guys making us all look bad filling an entire bin. I've never seen someone stow their bags in the belly unless there was already a pile of 30 passenger bags in the jet bridge.

21, so you trump me there. I just can't believe you think QOL sucks. Our contract sucked several magnitudes worse when I got hired. Auto short call at 0300 your first day on call, no hotel for any training for ATL commuters, 3 day trips that paid 11 hours, reserves getting paid far less than the regular line holder in the other seat flying the exact same trip, no PS deviation from dh, and in your new hire days, no JS even on our own metal!
I could go on. DALPA has done a great job improving our QOL, one modest step at a time. Each individual improvement may not have screamed loud headlines, but the cumulative result has been good.
I had four days of vacation last month and I bid reserve. I didn't fly a single day. I was assigned two short calls. I'll keep telling myself how much our QOL sucks. I'm A320A which I admit is staffed well, and this won't repeat in the summer.
