Good point.

Question for the peanut gallery here. As this was my first AE at Delta to have displacements, that I'm aware of, I get the bottom M88 A's displacing, but how does senority nbr 928, 777 Capt get mandatory displaced from DTW to ATL? Trying to understand this process a bit more, but seeing guys all over the seniority spectrum get displaced isn't making sense to me. Thanks, and yes I took the short bus to school growing up

When categories are shrinking or being closed all together people have to be MD'd.
They have an option to bid out earlier, of course, but that would be an AE award, not MD in which case they get free move and no seatlock if re-training.

In simplest terms, the AE posted on April 16th stated that there would be 10 DTWB777 Captains displaced. The most junior Capt in that category has a 999 seniority number soooooo.....he and nine other of his more senior "friends" were kicked off the B777 in DTW and were forced to move to a position of their choice where their seniority allowed them and......well......with a 999 seniority number and better, that means they could go anywhere they wanted in the Delta system. 😁

There was a surplus of 10 DTW 777 Captain positions on this AE, which Crew Resources described as the beginning of closing that category by summer 2019. 5 DTW 777 Captains took voluntary displacements, and the pilot you mentioned (#928) is one of 5 that had to be mandatorily displaced to reach the advertised -10 positions.

These are very senior Captains being displaced out of DTW 777. When displaced they can go to whatever category they want that has a pilot junior to them. When they go to ATL 777 or LAX 777 for example, the junior pilots in those categories can be forced out if there are no vacancies to absorb the additional staffing. These are called secondary displacements. This can ripple effect badly down the seniority list if there are not enough vacancies allowed somewhere to cushion the blow. This is why Crew Resources chose to do a giant bid last year when closing DTW 747 and NYC M88. The 747 guys especially would have caused significant secondary displacements if not for DTW A350 vacancies and many other vacancies around the system.

One thing that can cause confusion is that the AE results are broken up into three lists. The first list is awards for vacancies. The second list shows surplus displacements sorted by which category pilots are displacing TO. The third list shows the same displacements but is organized by which category pilots are displacing FROM. They are not labeled particularly well.

Gang,

Thanks for the excellent explanation and examples. Sincerely, appreciate it. Although it would seem odd to me to have these displacements considering the massive growth in Airbus 321, 330-900 and 350 and the C-series. It just seems to be a checkers type move rather than a chess game considering many of the displaced folks could possibly have held A position in one of the newer aircraft on the way. This seems to put a significant burden on the training department and the folks being displaced considering that the next AE, may have positions they could have held without displacing to another aircraft of domicile. Is this flawed logic?
Anyway thanks for all the explanations...Cheers.

The 777 displacements have to happen. They are closing the category and the time will move to LAX and ATL.

The 88 displacements also have to happen as the airplane is starting to retire. IMHo the first 50 M88 captains were a gimme. The can’t hold captain anywhere else and likely will not be able too for over a year. Things get more complicated with the next batch of 88 captains but I think that will largely be canceled out with vacancies on the 320, 73, and C series. I also think they will finally post some vacancies on the 777, 330, and 765, enough to cancel out the remaining 777 displacements in DTW. So, stand by for another MOAB.....

In a previous crew resources update they already talked about doing exactly this when the 744 category was closed. I'm sure someone will dig it up before too long.

During the MOAB they expanded various categories by posting vacancies, especially with 160 per seat on the A350 (only decided to fill 125 per) as well as numerous narrow body Capt positions.
