Sounds to me like they covered an international trip with a SC. That's pretty efficient. You were available all day to do something just in case and still covered the trip. All while burning only a single SC and because you flew they didn't even need to credit you for it.

Being within 17 minutes of timing out and cancelling the flight isn't exactly a shining example of efficiency. Maybe that was the only way they could have covered that flight and if so I get it...from a short term immediate needs perspective. But how did it get to that point? And we're supposed to be fat on pilots right now, to the point of cutting next year's hiring in half even as retirements continue to rapidly build. Running on fumes and covering flights with the last possible pilot theoretically available is hardly an example of tactical efficiency. Sounds like they just got lucky.

Yet, it got done. As it always does. That proactive captain saved the day and all is well. As for the hiring, you really have to have a crisis before you can extract more productivity.

Curious regarding people’s opinion on this reserve non-rule. Had a trip block in on midnight, followed by a day of rest then a trip that reports at 500am the next day. Seeing as living in base I drive 2 hours to get to the airport, it’s kind of a strain for the circadian rhythm. Is there lobbying to have reserve days segmented into “early/late” days? Too much of a strain on scheduling? Does anyone else care about this?

You can submit preferences for both SC and open trips in PCS based upon one’s circadian rhythms. (Doesn’t mean you always get for what you ask, but I do pretty well with it.) If you still can’t stand the schedule, you could always bid a line.

Don't fly fatigued. That said, this will probably be more prevalent with a shorter SC window. Enjoy your new found productivity. Get them done as early in the month as possible and then you're on long call or trips.

Data point of one:

Sat SC yesterday and was 1 of 3 through-our the day, which was fairly standard for my category.

SC started at 1500, scheduled to release at 0000. I called at 2200 and got released after 7 hours.

So far so good!

What does the shorter short call window have to do with only getting 35 hours off between trips?
