Tesla has come a long way, but still has a way to go before you call it a real performance car.
Just to be fair the P85D is a 5 year old Tesla. The current version is vastly different and will likely be faster on a road course than the Porsche at a lower price point.

I went on a fairly short road trip in a friend’s model 3 and the range was not good. A trip that you could normally do in 1 tank of gas ultimately took 3 pit stops (we weren’t able to start on a full charge due to a super charger station not working and having to charge overnight from a normal outlet). If I get a Tesla I would rent a gas car if I ever went on a road trip over 200 miles. Also not a good car to bring back country camping.

There are some trips that will not be convenient, but there are more chargers than you think, I would totally do a road trip anywhere in the US with my Model 3. Back-country is a little harder because areas with no services..well.. don't have any services.

abetterrouteplanner.com or plugshare make it easy to plan a route and find chargers. But an electric car isn't a gas car, there isn't a charging station on every corner. But there are still lots of chargers, and companies like EVGo and Electrify America are adding lots, in addition to Tesla's supercharger network.

I drive mine on trips 300-500 miles every couple months. Not an issue if you’re near super chargers. Adds a very minimal amount of time (30-45 min). If there aren’t, level 2 destination chargers are everywhere. There’s also public chargers...lots of options.

As far as back county camping, who’s taking their new BMW 5 series or MB E350 back country camping? Thats the same thing as taking a M3.

With the traction control technology onboard, probably better than any other car. I’ve been out after a snow storm and it was excellent. This is especially cool and a peek into the future of full self driving: https://youtu.be/TZ2Cir9OkPY

I’ve done plenty of Tesla road trips. Without knowing the circumstances, I’m guessing the start point wasn’t home. Leaving home with a full charge is Tesla road trip 101. 200 miles doesn’t even require a charging stop on some cars. Availability of charging, especially at the destination makes a huge difference. On a 1-2 charge trip (300-800 miles depending on battery), it’s generally easy to plan a meal stop at a supercharger or high power destination charger. For the 1000 mile/day trips, gas is more convenient. Avgas or Jet-A is even better.

I’m really looking forward to my first Tesla Cybertruck camping trip. The Honda Accord was not a good car to bring camping.

Anyone on here who has a Tesla with the Self-Driving A/P care to share their experiences? The only thing I have to compare it to is my daughter’s Rogue Sport and the Steer Assist. I’ve taken it on the road and it navigates quite well as long as the road markings are visible. In sharper turns and higher speeds it would give me a little pucker factor as to if it would actually make the turn. My hands had to be on the wheel too or after like 5 seconds it would bark a warning at me. How is the Tesla A/P in your experience? Summon feature? I flew with a CA who had a S and he said he used the summon feature several times when a T’storm came up and he had it come up to the front of a store so he could hop in. In videos I’ve watched, it appears to “hunt” a bit, when using summon and if your phone GPS position is off it will confuse it. Also, anyone experienced a mildew like smell from the A/C? I’ve seen some reviews of that happening. Thanks in advance.

There is video on YouTube of a guy bypassing the Tesla safety "hands-on" AP by simply wedging an orange in the steering wheel.
