116 does not include the 20 or so flow through that were previously withheld came over this month.

~450 since October 1
With class 12-21, we've had 649 hired this year. 162 in Oct, 193 in Nov, and 76 in Dec. If the 28th is the biggest class of the year, it'll have to be at least 59 pilots, putting the total this year north of 708.

For those that care about such things, a whopping 21 of the 617 pilots hired through class 20-21 are female, half of which were in the last two classes. Better yet, only 8 are black. Greater than 91.5% of all new hires this year are white men. Diversity indeed.

My daughter is in college at a major university. I have talked to her friends several times, and they are always a little intrigued by the airline life. But, none of them want to be pilots. Doctors, lawyers, engineers, IT, and nursing, but not interested in aviation. They know they have the opportunity to be pilots if they wanted, and they would likely have a much better career progression than their male counterparts, but they just don't want this lifestyle.

This lifestyle doesn't work for everyone. It is tough on families, and many people do not want the schedules that we have for the relatively small paycheck that we receive as compared to other careers available.

Maybe only white males are dumb enough to do this career, when there are much better careers out there.

Her friends will make more money, have more time off, retire earlier, and enjoy a more stable career than we have ever had.

How does that stack up with commercial pilots in general I wonder? Do any HBCUs offer a flight program? All I hear in FL on CTAF frequencies are diverse accents. At $150K for training, I think there are several people under represented. What's the native American and pacific islander count? My kids won't be getting an Embry education because it's cheaper to reinstate my CFIs and buy an airplane.

I would guess if she is at a major university, at least 80% of those that do manage to graduate will underperform the pay of a major airline pilot. Certainly there are a lot of people that outperform the pilot pay and lifestyle, but as a percentage, I think your portrayal of how abysmal the major airline profession is skewed.

You and I see this career completely differently, which of course is fine. Granted, my household is dual-income and that probably colors my view of the airline pilot life and perhaps it would feel much different if I were the perpetual sole bread winner. I’ll say the orthopedic surgeons I know are filthy rich and absolutely miserable. In my experience, it’s pretty difficult to find many miserable airline pilots if they’ve found their way to a good job at a Major. Most seem to be leading pretty rewarding and fulfilling lives. Hopefully the decade ahead improves things for us all!
