also, is DAL planning to *grow* at all? For example 13K pilots today, how many planned in 2025?
Yes, growth is planned. They haven't really said much as far as numbers go other than more or less fully recovered by the end of summer 2023. That would put us somewhere between 14,500 and 15000 pilots. Current plan is to continue 200/month hiring indefinitely.

just to be clear 80xx *last four of social* is better than 12XX.

12XX *Seniority number* is definitely better than 80XX

i think DAL is planning to grow, to what number is just speculation but I think 15,000-16,000 is not unreasonable.

I’ve heard we want 16.5K by summer 25.

Well they have reversed the retirement of the 717s and the 7ERs that were planned to be phased out by 2025. Actually they are reactivating the 717s they had parked, mid 60s now with the potential of adding more perhaps. We are still taking delivery of 220, NEOs, 330s, and 350s. So Im felling like I can say with 51% confidence that we are planning to grow.

I wouldn’t feel better than 50.69% on anything more than one day out. Within one day is limited to 69%.

Think of it this way, there's around 13,300 right now and:
- Most categories are handing out plenty of greenslips in the slowest month of the entire year of flying
- International fleets are not staffed normally yet since they are doing domestic ops

Probably ought to be at 14,500 right now just to avoid another holiday mass cancellation event, without any growth.

I agree, sounds like if we keep this pace (200/month) til summer 23, with scheduled retirements factored in, we will be around 16,000 pilots, give or take.

But this all falls into the category of speculation, albeit more like an educated guess.

Factor in a new contract that may require more pilots on top of that. We have a long way to go in hiring just to get back to our old size. Then factor in growth.... Hopefully no more global hiccups this decade. Could be great timing for a lot of individuals.
For reference, the seniority list posted in June 2018 was the high point in total number of pilots. That list went to 14719.

From there we drifted down to the 144xx’s for most of 2019. The April 2020 list had us back 14701. 12538 was the post-pandemic low in June 2021.
