You bid on what’s available in the email they send you before Indoc.

In my class there were 13 choices offered. I got my first choice with 20/64 seniority.

My $.02.....I don't know.

The 220 fleet is growing now (actively taking deliveries) and I believe there are still options on the table that could be turned into firm orders. Growing fleet means more people behind you in category and always have the option to bid with LCP and hope you get bought off.

737 does have 29 gently used 737's coming but we won't see them until starting end of this year....lots of work to be done on those. The cockpit layouts are different, planes have been sitting in the jungle and need a deep cleaning. They even pulled a 6.9 foot snake out of one of them....great....Motherf@cking Snakes on our Motherf@cking planes.

220 is very quiet cockpit and FO bags fits (as well as the JS'ers)

737 is loud and FO bags goes in closet in the back, which sucks when you are trying to catch a tight flight home and 180 people are de-planing.

737 FO pay is $10-13 more per hours

One man's trash is another man's treasure kind of thing.

Welcome to Delta!

I think it's not going to be this year, it was planned that way but been delayed. Officially, I think the answer is To Be Determined...

My case:
48 years old (17 years left)
Live close to MCO (will always commute from there)
8xxx series SSN - so I think that helps bidding initially
Goal: Maximize income over 17 years, while minimizing commutes (1-2 trips per month [even if they're longer] is better than 3-4 trips per month).

I hear 73, 7ER, 765 are now doable bids as a new hire. I have no idea what life is actually like on any of those.

ATL seems like the obvious choice commuting from MCO. But is it?

I have a dream: Be gone 10-12 days per month - make captain pay within 5-6 years. Don't care about weekends, red-eyes, etc. (no kids at home). Biggest thing is fewer trips. Length of trips, not an issue. I'd rather do 12 days on, 20 off. Instead of 3 on, 5 off. Don't know if that's even a thing at DAL.

Am I dreaming too big? What bids make the most sense for that? Reminder: only 17 years before I'm out.

Any thoughts would help - even if you just want to make fun of me - witty jokes welcome.

Thanks.
As someone already mentioned. You can bid all your reserve days at once at Delta with no off days interspersed. If you go with a more junior airframe than 765 (maybe with it but don't know reserve patterns on it) you can eventually alternate months if you really want to (2nd half one month to 1st half of the next).

You have to be a senior enough reserve bidder to do that, if you are super junior on reserve BPT have lots of weekend “coverage awards”.

What is BPT and what is it’s significance, as it applies to junior guys?

In the past when the ATL 765 was almost all vacation Europe destinations, in the summer reserve actually went Senior most of the time as the ALV was high and senior pilots would take 80hrs on the chance that they may get used once. As a middling seniority pilot I often could not get my preference of reserve and was handed a line. During the winter on some years 1/3 of the category was on reserve with line holders getting lines of 65-69 hrs. During those months you'd get 72hrs with little chance of getting used as line holders would suck up any open time. It was often 12req/50avail on the reserve list. Obviously during the non-summer months you could manipulate your schedule quite easily. Hope the Europe comes back to that level soon.
It was really a very seasonal bidding plane.

Commuting to ATL as a Floridian is more desirable as many more trips in ATL are commutable vs NYC trips. Even if on reserve in MCO, you can YS for a commutable trip. First flt from MCO is probably in the 530am range with a 630 or so backup making anything with a sign in after 8am commutable. Likewise coming back to MCO there is often a 1030PM and often an 1130PM option making almost any trip return commutable. If you go to NYC, you will spend many more days either going up a day early or returning the following days. That's one of the main reasons NYC is so much junior, not to mention they have many more trips in the NYC area with very early sign ins and very late returns as ATL is built for connections. Lastly on the NYC NB side you are covering multiple airports, in ATL you are covering one, that has a plethora of cheap hotels surrounding it.
