There may not really be a trend but are there normally more positions (regarding variety) available right before or after an AE?

It sort of depends. There was one time when they delayed the next AE a bit and used up all their NYC spots from the last AE, so the last few classes had much greater variety of bases to choose from. On the flip side, if your goal is a wide body theres probably a greater chance of getting that in a drop right after a new AE (assuming there are more unfilled WB spots).

In the last year or so, I think every FO position has been available for new hires, widebodies included. Of course, that changes each AE.

Pretty sad we still canceled 3 more flights than them when they had 6x as many delays as us. Actually shocking they had only 18 cancellations with 2400 delays. Guess they need it tighten up their optimizer settings to get rid of some more slop!
