That concurs with everything I’ve been hearing too. 800 by summer strongly implies no or reduced hiring over the summer but then picking up in fall. But we’ll see.

How's the commute from PHX these days to the west coast bases (SLC, LAX, SEA)? Most recent info on that question is from about 4 years ago. Any insight on how often those bases see phx layovers? Thanks.

I have no personal knowledge, but definitely recommend checking out ALPA's pilot dashboard. There is a commuter tool that gives numbers of pilots who commute where.

Caveat: that information is as only as good as the information pilots give to ALPA regarding their address.

LAX is a mix of RJs and offline. There may be one or two bookable DL JS. Some line holders buy tickets for peace of mind. SEA and SLC have mainline JS options along with several offline options. I can't speak to the competitiveness of the commute. Check the DALPA commuter lookup tool for some guidance. Any decision based on domestic layovers is chasing your tail.

PHX to LA has a lot of seats, but few on us. There are a lot daily departures but only 5 are ours, with 4/5 being an RJ.

Rule of thumb is don't bid an aircraft hoping for layovers there. Network changes the aircraft going through a city regularly.

I just flew with a guy that was a commuter from PHX and now based in SLC. He was going to SEA for the better trip destinations (he liked Alaska stuff) and had plenty of options for commutes with at least 2 bookable JS available daily. Aircraft used switches up a bit during the year so layovers wasn't a guarantee year round. He said he switched to SLC because there was more options to commute and if he has to buy a ticket they are cheap.
I've got FA and pilot friends that do the LA commute and it can be brutal. A few buddy bid and carpool.

Anyone have any experience/anecdotes with this? For instance you buy a ticket to commute to work and the flight gets cancelled. You don’t have a backup because you had a ticket. Justifiable?
