If we want instructors on the line for summer we need to taper off hiring by the end of April to early May. June new hires will be in the sims in July and august.

Good points. I guess we’ll find out sooner than later. I’m hoping to try again this year.

I’ve noticed there’s been a lack of NYC in the class drops. Anyone know if I can get it before I finish training? Especially for the A320?

NYC and LAX are relatively small 320 bases, sensitive to mass competition. Best we can tell is the company doesn’t like risking too much staffing in NYC320B. Until the ER goes away, I wouldn’t expect much seat growth in NYC. That being said, they are usually pretty quick to backfill. Usually always a few leaving.

Any reason for them not liking to staff NYC320B?

Again, NYC is subject to competition from every single airline. I’m sure the company likes to run lean so they can shift fleets on routes at will. Unlike ATL/DTW where they can do as they please with the 320 at all times. Hence… the majority of vacancies going to those bases.

I’m sure it also has NOTHING to do with NYC based pilots being subject to liberal employment laws, getting commuter stipends, etc…. Why All that extra cost when you could just start the rotation in DTW/ATL and flow through NYC?

NYC is VERY heavy commuters, probably something like 80%. Being a commuter heavy market + lots of RJs means extreme vulnerability to IROP events. They'd much rather eat a bunch of hotels than risk flights cancelling for lack of crew

Right. Also it’s not all or nothing. So they could hire over the summer just less, etc. lots of ways they could handle it. The yearly numbers everyone’s been using (800-1600 at the high end) could all happen with no or with very reduced summer hiring.

During DCLC a few weeks ago we were told they wanted ~800 by summer and they were trending north of 1,000 for the year.
