Commuting for a few months would definitely be subpar.. but I assume wouldn't be the end of the world. Definitely would like the available OT pay to help bridge the transition and upgrade as soon as possible would be a factor too (In DTW).
Doesn't matter what plane you start out on, upgrade has no bearing on that...

Anew hire will be around 8+ years to be the left seat plug, anyway.

You're saying a new hire right now will take 8 years to upgrade to captain?

Too many variables to say for certain, but if you base that only on the current seniority needed to hold narrow body A & normal rate of retirement attrition, that seems to be pretty close.

Tough to have a real answer with airline growth, aircraft deliveries, etc. baked in.

According to Widget Seniority, guys who were hired in the back half of 2023 are looking at a 6-7 year window from date of hire to hold 737A.

Yes. That's what I'm saying.

It all depends, mostly on two variables: forward growth and age 67. Assuming the retirement age stays at 65, and the current trend of about 80% system seniority for the first opportunity to upgrade to Captain holds (Look here for data on the last 31 bids with a graph and trendlines), it will take somewhere around 8 years for a NH today to reach 80% with no growth, or around 5 years with 2% growth (a more likely scenario). "Ish". If the retirement age goes up, those times will extend by roughly the same amount as the extension (maybe a little less as not every 65 year-old will continue to 67.)

80% is a good, proven planning factor. There have been times when actual awards have gone both junior and senior to that 80%, so YMMV. Also, future wide body deliveries may shift more NB captains to WB, which will open up seats for things to go a little junior over time. (Remember the 787 doesn't even begin to show up until 2031 at the earliest. Some 339 and 359's will show up in the late 2020's.)

FWIW, by historical standards, 5-8 years still pretty fast. Post-Covid upgrade timing was crazy, but is a historical outlier due to incredibly fast hiring - 5000 pilots in 2 years will do that. Also, the crazy fast MD-88 awards just before Covid were also fast for a reason. But on the flip side, the 'lost decade' (9/11, Bankruptcies, and 60>65) saw incredibly long times at 12-15 years. The lesson there is, it's always changing...

Thanks for breaking it down. Good info!

Coming up on my re-application period. Feels like it’s probably too late for 2026, last I saw only classes planned stopped in June. Any news or hopium for this strawberry? I’m really happier and reframed my mental. I think I’m ready.

There's a really popular USMC saying that I think applies here.

It’s not that they plan to stop in June, it’s that they are hedging for now, and just haven’t made anything official. Most everyone is expecting classes to continue more or less uninterrupted.

Assuming world events don’t change things, which we cannot know for a while.

Usually, when it’s said that hiring stops in June, even if true, that typically means only for summer as instructors are pulled to fly the schedule. Typically hiring resumes in fall.
