I’m not following you here. If you want to start rollin, spilling into X days does exactly that. If you spill in to RES days you haven’t made any progress toward thunder and have actually likely delayed it. Besides working towards filling up or creating an intentional 117 conflict for subsequent nasty trips (which will cost at least hundreds and possibly thousands of dollars in lost over-guarantee pay) I can’t think of a reason one would prefer to spill a GS into RES instead of X days.

I had to use this strategy at the beginning of the month. It was the way my schedule was awarded so I couldn't help it. 4 green slips, 14 days at work, and 138 hours pay say that the strategy worked just fine.

That is great(seriously). I'm the guy that would love to hear how you did that(not gonna affect me since I'm leaving but I would hope that others are interested). But the really neat thing about this job with it's layered BES "seniority system" is that there are a lot of ways to skin the cat. Some times it's luck, sometimes it's planning that allows "luck" the shine thru. But I can categorically say, I have always been amazed at how little inquisitiveness most pilots exhibit as to how to "optimize" their schedule(QOL/time off/pay.)

What you did would not apply to my category because we are not massively undermanned, GS are not flowing like water etc. but "techniques" are still available for me to optimize. Thru my career those strategies changed....but they were always there(except long ago when we had LOT bidding with a hard cap and "bow wave" which foiled most strategies.) The guys that don't want to learn the contract, will push for agreements that "equalize" the work so that it requires more pilots and they can make more by the inherent seniority rise due to some pilots being unable to be more productive. Other pilots want to have the option to "push it up" if they are more motivated(vacay pre-sell is another good example) Usually the "rift" is whose "ox is getting gored" and who reaps the benefits. (personally I tend towards less toward the socialist model and embrace the "rewards for more work" model)(since we have an established sen list, any work rule changes invariably affect one side more than another and will provide "forum fodder" for as long as there are air line pilots)

Cheers and congrats on your good strategy

It’s great you were so efficient and I’m glad it worked out. I’m just saying that the question was under what circumstances one would prefer to schedule their reserve days or X days at the spill point early in the month. I’m not sure one generally benefits from that arrangement when contemplating a previous month green slip spill. As you said - you couldn’t help your configuration and therefore it doesn’t seem to actually be a strategy…in spite of your eventual success rolling thunder. Semantics, I guess. And in my limited experience, luck and serendipity have been more profitable than strategy anyway.

I just picked up a four day GS about 4 hours prior to report time. Day 1 is X day days 2-4 were RES. I already had been tagged with a three day on the RES days, so I knew I’d be working anyway. Being it’s the end of the month, the PB day(s) will go into my bank which has value so I took it. Dropped the three day RES trip and took the 4 day. Consequently, the three day they took off my RES ended up going to someone else as a GS.

Couple questions for the collective here:

This “four day” blocks in just before midnight on day 4, but release time is after midnight into day “5” of the trip. Day “5” is an X day. Does the duty time release interrupting the calendar day just after midnight warrant the award of another PB (PR) day? At the moment I’ve been awarded zero payback days. As usual, PCS overlooks that part of the transaction when covering trips.

Also, does the trip credit credit on day “5” the day of release or day 4, the day you block in? This is relevant as it’s the difference between the trip credit being paid above guarantee or towards it. Day 4 was RES day 5 was X day.

Good example....and don't forget 1:2 Duty Rig being paid on the day earned, not at the end of the rotation (like ADG and Trip Rig do).

Thats good info, I thought all the rig or ADG credit went to the end.

I believe 12.L.1.c is the reference for that as you are paid the greater of the block time or Duty Period Credit (1:2...or 1:1.5 for red-eyes) for that day.

Are you talking about a spillover green slip with X days at the end of the first month and RES days at the beginning of the next month?

If that's what you're referring to, I read your original post wrong. In that case, I would prefer X days at the beginning of the next month. If I had RES days at the beginning of the next month I would still take a green slip if I either wanted to bank PB days or would be assigned a trip on those RES days anyway.

You should get a PB day for day 1 and pay above guarantee for any block or DH block on day 1. Days 2-4 block and any last day credit go towards guarantee.

since the trip is a “5 day” because you are released after midnight you will get PR since that is an off day but no extra $$. This is due to the carve out from 0000-0130. If day 5 is in the current bid month (June) you will get a banked PB day. If it is the next bid month (July) you SHOULD see PR on your first on call day.
