That's not arbitrary either. Hire date is seniority, so obviously dates a week apart are set in stone. People that start on the same day must be sorted in some other fashion, that's a law of nature. Drawing straws, flipping coins, portions of SSNs, those have no basis other than random selection, age does not.

But I would support a future change to age within a new hire class because that is more fair to older pilots within a class. The myth of "age related lawsuits" is a nothingburger.
There is nothing inherently unfair about a 23 year old ninja with a 9999 last 4 being the plug within a class while the 61 year old flow with a 0001 number gets that one little advantage one time. Its actually more fair because the ninja will have decades more long after the older ones are gone. They don't need a few more numbers right out the gate.
