Ditto, but I didn't consider this as doing the FOs any favors. I would rather rather walk around and stretch my legs than spending an additional 30 minutes on my butt every leg. I just always viewed the walkaround as more desirable than sitting in the cockpit.

In my RJ captain years I almost never did walk arounds because I didn't have time for them. I still gotta check all the stuff, figure out how to get around the weather, brief FAs, comply with MELs, deal with whatever random problem **** is happening. There's some things to delegate but a lot of things my eyes need to set least pass over it. Trust but verify. There's no time I ever felt more busy as a captain than preflighting at the gate. But we also had -45m instead of 1hr, oftentimes as much as little as -20m on quick turns. The walk around was the least of my priorities. Out you go, my eyes are better applied to the plan than the scratch and dented log.
If finishing your walkaround at D-40 doesn't leave you enough time to find a path around a thunderstorm and read through MELs, you're pretty bad at your job. Arguably "applying your eyes" over the aircraft itself on a walkaround is just as important as anything else you mentioned. Maybe more so, with icing or CSFF considerations. If every mission is a helmet fire you're doing it wrong.

The truth is Podracer wanted the FO gone so they could get first pass on the snack-basket. I know this because I too was once an RJ pilot.

The airplane doesn't even pull into the gate until D-40 and then the off load, FA brief, etc. The walk around takes me 10 minutes and we are down to 30ish and the other NFP stuff along with flight plan review and MELs. The FO has more than enough time to walk around.

The ipad has made reviewing stuff at the gate before the plane arrives easier but I don't have access to the log book yet either. I guess I'm just bad at my job because I generally don't go the extra mile or rush.

you must work at a completely different airline from me. i can count on one hand the number of complex mel/logbook issues i’ve been surprised by in my time here.

”i just don’t wanna” is a fine reason not to share walks, but pretending you’re prepping for a moon mission is just comical

On my plane we can review the last few pages of the logbook from our ipads. But I have literally never felt the need to open my ipad at the gate unless it's to check icrew 😂

You always seem to be on the opposite side of every consensus in this forum. This job is not that hard. If you're that rushed and pressed for time that you can't do a walk around, then something is going on and you probably need to evaluate whether you're being rushed by some kind of external factors.

Edit: also, guess what the FO is doing when you're doing the walk-around? Looking up MELs and reading the flight plan/NOTAMs! They'll probably tell you about them during this thing called the departure briefing.

mycabin has all the current log items and mel issues in it, as does the flight plan. looking at the logbook for history takes a few seconds, but anything more than that regularly and you’re trying to create problems that don’t exist.

Both can be true. I don't want to and I am thorough with my prep. I don't see a need to add tasks to the list. I do and have done walkarounds but have also been bit by issues when returning to the flight deck that could have been addressed earlier. I'm generally one of those "sunny and 70" captains unless we just finished a long leg and I want to move around. I'm just arguing the other side because I can tell you want to argue.

what does getting “bit” look like? a few minutes of delay once every few years?

this is reminding me of the guy i flew with that wouldn’t let the ground crew disconnect until the engines were running because he lost a generator once decades prior.

Do you have a problem with discussions with contrarians? Are you in need of APC consensus?
