So either adapt, or get left behind while clinging to outdated paradigms. Its in Delta’s long term interest to get the jump on this.
Recruiting is a reason for creating bases? This is so out of touch I don't know where to begin.

I don’t think anyone here is talking about opening new hubs in these cities. Given our ongoing NB fleet consolidation, small 320 or 737 bases would be feasible in many cities with little change to our existing network.

The company has done this for many years for FAs. It would absolutely benefit pilot recruitment. It would also likely take a complete turnover of our current management team to ever occur.

Not mgmt, the union itself is built to protect existing bases and stand in the way of outlying bases. There is a whole airline sized LEC in ATL that will squash any attempts to make small bases that are anywhere they perceive to be "their flying is to be diluted".

This is true. Even at United their union has to approve of their new bases in some fashion.

The company small flight attendant bases are virtual. Some are seasonal and others have been closed and new ones opened. Delta can open new pilot bases anytime they want. They can’t however be virtual or seasonal. The management team was very receptive and had bid out the first virtual base for pilots in MCO. I presume you are new but the union shut it down before the test started.

Didn't Covid end the season and virtual base model for them?

I’ve heard this a lot. Which cracks me up since all the other bases dilute flying as well. ATL ER pilots doing INTL outta NYC Mid-rotation. NYC 220 Folks doing SEA flying. Next month every flight from NYC -> HNL (and the return) is covered by an LAX crew.

AUS currently has ~40 departures a day. Mostly on the 320. Throw a joint base with Dallas or SAT and you’re up to 70-80. 320 or 220 only into the Texas cities for the last 5+ years. Some of our bases have less departures on certain fleets than that…

From my understanding the Union pulled the plug on the virtual basing in MCO. If anything a few outstation bases would ease some commuting pressure, open up some seats for nonrevving and be a useful tool for recruiting. Fewer pairings with a penalty lap too probably…

When you are an FA, your job is dictated by one entity, the company. They can start, stop, cancel, expand anything they want with the FA's because there is no working agreement to deal with.

That is the flexibility the company arguably spends extra millions of $$$ to retain.
