Its a major US city, theres gonna be a homeless person or two, just dont go to the tenderloin. Its a beautiful city, perfect weather year round, tons of stuff to do. I swear some people see one homeless person and think their life is in danger.
Or just bid avoid it and save some for the rest of us. Just don't be that guy that talks crap about the city in front of the van driver or the SFO based flight attendants.

My favorite most cringey thing is when commuters try to tell people who live in NYC, LAX, or SFO how dangerous and horrible their city/state is because they somehow know better than the actual people who live there from what they've seem on tv or read on some alarmist website.

Let’s not draw false equivalencies. There is a spectrum and some cities are worse than others, even if the problem itself is ubiquitous. SFO is particularly bad and it’s not wrong to state this.

Many of them know they live in a crappy city. There is no obligation to pretend fantasy is reality. Ask what areas they avoid and maybe they will share the live feed of the poop map to help navigate the layover.
Engage the locals and ask their opinion. There is a tactful way to approach the topic without openly criticizing their choice(or circumstance) of residence. I heard plenty of criticism about my hometown from outsiders and thought it was unwarranted until living in other areas. Maybe share the positives in other cities and ask what is good about NYC/LAX/OAK/PDX etc... Living in a place can make you blind to reality.

Not directed at you either, I just don’t understand making excuses for the behavior.

I've flown to SFO with new hire FOs a few times recently on their first ever SFO layover and en route they tell me how all their captains have told them what a terrible ****hole the city is and how it's overran with homeless people. And I'm like ehh it's really not that bad dude. Then in the van driving through SF they point out every homeless person with glee saying "wow so many homeless!!" "What a liberal ****hole!"
It's really embarrassing.

Add to that I commute from a city that’s been the Fox News flavor of the month lately.. nothing like just meeting a crew member for the first time and they immediately talk down about my own home. It’s rude and lacks social skills or awareness.

BTW, I would rather layover in downtown SFO than LAX. My last layover in LAX was the only time I was nervous venturing out more than a block or two from the hotel at night. I was shocked by the number of homeless, and I do quite a bit of west coast flying.
