A very good post overall, WRT ALPA's seniority bias. Since 2000, our union has taken a number of steps to ensure a more equitable distribution of assets throughout the list.

You're taking a couple of liberties with your represenattion of the Note, which ended up being grossly skewed towards senior pilot and being billed as an offset for "retirement-related concessions" AFTER a settlement with the PBGC, and AFTER selling the claim and note as a consideration for concession (not retirement concessions) when we voted on LOA 51. Also, COBRA was nice, but the active pilots did vote to do away with the furloughees recall schedule in LOA 46, and many did gorge from the trough of greenslips while others had no job. The COBRA is merely a spoonfull of sugar. Appreciated, but no substitute for a job.

I did not discuss the claim money. The claim money was to offset the pay and work rule changes going forward from the 1113 contract. Its often forgotten about in pay rate comparisons to other airlines during that period. The note however was a direct retirement replacement and only payable if the retirement plan was terminated.
The furlough recall schedule was modified but other sections in the contract made it likely the company would recall and they did recall. I believe in fact the recalls were faster then required under LOA46.
Greenslips were not a senior issue. They were spread throughout the list. In fact the category with the most greenslips during that time period was probably the MD88B or the 737B. The churning kept then short and lots of greenslips went out. In the end the company was going to cover the flying. I loved being met and the gate and handed a trip assignment when I did not want to fly. Happened several times to me once over Christmas. I would prefer they take the volunteer first. What we needed was a contractual provision limiting overtime flying with a pilot on furlough. You have to allow the company some flexibility in the event of something like the storm that just hit NY but you could put limits in place. It is worth mentioning however that GS's increase the required manning so are self correcting to a certain extent and helped get guys recalled.

Yes, there is a rule. PBS biggest benefit was that it eliminates conflicts at the end and start of a month. This smooths out the reserves required and reduces greenslips. If you could swap and pickup after the PBS snapshot is taken to run the program you could create conflicts. Its a concession carried over from the chapter 11. I think there have been some changes and the restrictions reduced but its still there.
The interesting thing is that it does not make total sense because the contract does allow you to fill up in the current month even if it creates a conflict in the next month so once the PBS lines are posted you can pick up a conflicting trip.

I called them. They said the last 6 days of the month with the PBS run is running are closed to changes.

What's new, I'm still learning. When I know it all, it will be time for me to retire. :D

Tell me one captain of a widebody who had to do 20 years in the right seat with the company. There's your perspective.

When the situation is what it is, the senior guy who says that needs to understand the landscape has changed. I know pilots are by and large narcissist, but the guy who makes that statement you referred to needs to clue in.

You do have valid points. My point is that with a seniority list this large you will see all sorts of different stories. If you were hired in 1980-81, you spent 5-7 years on reserve on the 727 panel before you even got to sit in the right seat, much less the left. However, if you were hired in 1985, you were a narrowbody captain at five years and widebody at just past ten!

I think that DALPA has done a lot of good for the junior guys that past few contracts. I know that UCAL and APA are fighting (and probably not succeeding) to get longevity for furlough years. We have had that for awhile, and it didn't come free. Etc.

But if you think that SC should be somewhat connected to RAW buckets (I at least partially agree) contacting your rep is the best thing to do. Venting on this anonymous forum is only that--venting.

How long does it usually take them to publish the projected training/conversion list?

Yowza!

The bucket system I think is a great improvement, however via emails sent to DALPA, they think that 80 is perfectly fine for bucket 1 and that it is fine having SC's split off from that. I don't know if it is pride or what...

So, there is a rule that says they don't do swaps at the end of the month while a PBS bid is being processed?

I put in for a swap the Saturday after Thanksgiving, it didn't go through, and the denial reason was PBS run in process.

Does that sound right?

I've had similar, and I'm quite sure that is the case. Until PBS is done running, you can't do something at the end of the month because that could be made illegal once the PBS award comes out.

They want to train their new-hires from the ground up.

Not saying it's right or wrong.. but to say that there are no home grown pilots in Germany is not true.

Motch

Horrido, did you know that prior to the invasion of Poland on Sept 1st 1939, the tail of your Luftwaffe eagle pointed upwards? It was supposed to be a nicer and more sensitive eagle. Speaking of tail...NICE ONE BOOMER!!! Oh, and brother 80...if I may quote Buzz..."I feel your pain!"
