It doesn't take a crystal ball to see what's going to happen with this deal.

This is just a continuation of the Australia thing.
Delta heavy jets are being phased out.

Its not really about pilot costs though. That's only a minor factor.
Its about generating revenue without having to make capital investments.
Delta wants to be a virtual airline to the extent possible. Selling airline tickets without actually having to buy airplanes is very profitable.

We fly a daily 767-400 from JFK to CDG. Since the JV, we've added a number of new cities (PIT, PHL, ORD, SEA, SLC) to Paris. The most we ever flew on that route was a daily 767-300 ER before the merger. How are we "phasing out" Delta heavy jets on Australia? Did I miss something?

I stand corrected then. We have 1 flight. How many flights does AF have JFK to CDG?
Without looking I think its 5 to our 1. And some are A380s! More in the summer.

How many flights is little Virgin Australia going to have to Oz?
Its going to be 21 to our 7.

How many widebodies do we have on order?
All these great deals and LOAs and contracts and ventures and our seniority list is ..... shrinking? Shrinking.

Wake up man. We are the frog being brought to a slow boil.

That would be cabotage.

Wrong.
Cabotage is if they fly NY to LA.
Atlanta to Sao Paolo is fifth freedom.
We do it every day at Narita. And we used to do it in Frankfurt until the genius Ron Allen gave it up.

I'm not saying this stuff will happen overnight.
I sure would like to see just a little genuine, organic Delta Air Lines international growth though. Not more "joint ventures" and "code sharing".

What you said was that the JV's have reduced our flying to Australia and Paris. They haven't. Like I said, DL has about 12 more frequencies to CDG than before the JV on DL metal. Many markets that we never served either. So what if AF flies an A380 to JFK. I'm wide awake, but there's no need to make things up to get a point across.

I'm not the least bit concerned about the Virgin JV. This is going to bring in huge traffic from the far and away number one European market. Until today, we've been shut almost completely out of that market. AA/BA just got some serious competition, and UAL is basically hosed at EWR. I would expect to see additional destinations to LHR added with DL metal in the near future if the past is any indication. I don't think we're ordering wide body aircraft because we have a huge fleet of paid for wide bodies that have just been refurbished.

Years ago we flew L10-11's ATL-CDG, which were replaced by the MD11 and they were replaced by the 777 on that route. It was about 5 years ago we took the 777 off and put an 767ER on it.

When I first got on the 777, 6 years ago, it flew Rome, Paris and London out of ATL...of course all I could hold was Bombay...but still...we used to fly the 777 to Europe's big 3.

Now we fly one flight a day to most Europe spots; A330, 764, or an ER, and code share to other airlines 777's to those destinations.

I agree about Heathrow. Competing there is critical.

I sure hope you are right about the rest but we've been pulling down capacity lately, not growing.

The corporation may be making big moves but "Delta" flying is slowly going away.
