No auto spoilers, no autobrakes, no autoland? That was every flight in the 727! How did we survive!

How about no autospoilers, no Autobrakes, no Autoland, no potable water, one main fuel pump out, and a loud drunk passenger arrested by airport police after our flight? (with everyone waiting around to write & sign official statements) That was my late night flight out of ATL.

That's why I've always advocated not using Auto anything, unless it's required for a Cat 3 (or 2) Autoland. If you get addicted to the automation, and you will if that's all you do, then when it's inop, you'll forget to step on the brakes!

I've seen it happen, in everything with autobrakes, the 88, 757, 767 and 777.
Nobody flying the 727 daily ever forgot to step on the brakes or pull the boards up! Yet our training dept./cubicle dwellers want you to use all the automation, all the time...

Why, can we not fly the airplanes? Are we not pilots?
"We are DEVO, Dee Eee Vee Oh."
We are witnessing the De evolution of basic piloting skills, as the magenta and Auto everything is shoved down our throats.
Bring on the next generation of button pushers!
Where did that FLY button go anyway, I can't go anywhere without it!

I'm going out in a Cherokee 140 in an hour to scare the crap out of a buddy who came over from Switzerland, this should be fun. The good news is most of you guys may move up a number before the day is out!
It felt like you got sent to the kids table at Thanksgiving.

Now one thing I feel for the 9 guys about is how often you have to say "unable to go direct" when cleared direct and you have no FMS.
The funny thing about having no FMS, is that the way we do training, cough cough, you'd swear that VNAV could never be on MEL let alone both FMSs. It's kind of nice when it is out in a way.
But you're not one of those Timbo.
The Flight Attendents gave him one drink then stopped. The drunk paid $50 to the guy next to him to buy drinks and give them to him. He became a problem on the last half of the flight. Taken away in handcuffs for public intoxication, but may be charged with harassment and assault as well.
No, we were fine. With performance corrections no problems with great weather and long runways. More of an irritant -- especially the lack of potable water.
