Thanks. That explains the missed approach and diverting vice just diverting. With the wx hovering right around mins and extra gas might as well hope for a 1200 RVR call and land.

One daring aviator (I will not mention what airline) not be deterred by WX apparantly below mins used the following technique which is not recommended:

One RJ goes around for WX below mins. Tower reads the WX to the next RJ who says "We are inside the FAF we can continue."

WTTF??? Hopefully the wx was above their minimus since it hadn't changed for over 20 minutes but if it was above minimums his response was strange to say the least.

Scoop,

Many RJ operators are approved for CAT II down to either 1600 RVR or 1200 RVR. I know Horizon Q200s were approved for hand flown SE CAT III approaches!!! I assume it's the same for their Q400s.

WRT your other comment, if the WX was legal when I crossed the FAF I'm going to mins. Why not? You're already that far so you may as well see if you can land. JMHO. :)

Oops! Felt bad for the dude who through no fault of his own had to do the "walk of shame" down the aisle. Then to add insult to injury he had to wait 5 minutes in the galley since the gate

Lots of fun in SLC last night. Freezing fog, holding, RVRs 800-1200 for hours, SMGCS Ops, and lots of DCI Jets diverting to alternates. What are most RJ minimums anyway?

Buzz, take your flight pay + flight adv from your Dec 31 pay and multiply by 0.0667 and that should be your gross profit sharing payment.

Awesome. Thanks dude!

Yep...handflown Cat III, one or two engines, to 50' DA and 600/400/400 . Had a few foggy days flying bouncing between PDX, SEA, and GEG with 6-7 Cat III approaches...after a while, 50' seems plenty high! :D

Your's are bigger than mine ever were!

I was confused about the DC9 info in the latest crew resources memo and e-mailed them to clarify the plan. The guy who puts out the newsletter replied and stated that YES, the DC9 categories WILL be closing on the next AE, mid March. As stated, it will be their 365 day conversion option, and network wants all DC9's parked by end of January 2014. All DC9 drivers will be converted by then. Looks like there is a MD in my future that I wasn't planning on evaluating...

Don't forget the Dash's approach speed is somewhere between -5kts with a good headwind to 95kts. :p

Heh...nah, man, I was in the right seat doing diddly squat. CA at Horizon is the one with the HGS, sweating it up in the left seat, seemingly maneuvering like mad to put the donut on the dot...while I'm chilling in the right seat watching the needles not even twitch. PFM!

That is one exhausting day!
